There was an excellent and quite moving report on Channel 4 News this evening from Pontypridd about the effect that the flooding had on local residents. We are used to seeing journalists on some channels standing beside flood water and spouting the latest press release, using the same old phrases such as 'rain falling on already saturated ground'. About 15-20 mins of the programme tonight focused on the emotional toll on local residents and included local politicians talking about potential long-term solutions in the face of climate change. Impressive journalism that stopped me in my tracks.

It was about 20 mins into the programme - https://www.channel4.com/programmes/channel-4-news/ - available until tomorrow evening's programme airs. The snag is you have to register to be able to play it back - including giving Ch 4 your address.

I think Channel 4 does the best news programmes these days. They are prepared to look into some news items in detail, rather than the BBC approach of saying the same cliches 10,000 times in a never ending loop together with archive pictures & social media clips. Still I suppose when:-

An area half the size of Wales has been flooded by a months rainfall falling in 24 hours due to climate change despite record amounts being spent on flood defences. Please stay away from the waters edge & do not travel unless absolutely necessary as once again the transport network has collapsed. Large waves may overtop sea defences so please stay well away from the sea. Strong gusts may cause trees to come down . . .

Altogether now!

An area half the size of Wales has been flooded by a months ra  . .

Now the news where you are

Exceptions of course, but that's the general impression.

Not to wind you up, Graham, I hope but here's an exception. A report on the BBC website today on Prince Charles' visit to South Wales where he added a stop at Pontypridd to meet flood victims. Helps to publicise the problem of insurers not being prepared to pay up on contents policies too.

Good for him.

By contrast, I hear there's a certain Mr Johnson who is refusing to visit flood-affected areas.
