It's been a quiet start to the North Atlantic tropical cyclone season so far (18 August) - you thought that by now I would have learnt my lesson tempting fate as I do. There should be some signs of activity in the next couple of weeks, but the ACE index has been flatlined for over a month, and only one of the three tropical cyclones do far scraping its way to category 1.

Back in May the Met Office predicted a slightly above ACE score of 109 for this season, so it'll have to get a move on.

If they do get it wrong they certainly won't be able to blame it on the record high global temperatures - perhaps it's all to do with the lack of sunspots?

The Met Office prediction is close to the NOAA prediction too, perhaps skewed to slightly higher values. NOAA predicted 9-15 named storms, with 4-8 becoming hurricanes and 2-4 becoming major hurricanes.
