Last week was very windy here, locally gusts >50mph Wednesday & Thursday, then the wind went quite suddenly, lovely ever since.

Saturday, from a walk  at Land's End. Looking NNE
Lands End View Apr 26.jpg

Not a cloud of any type, (even a contrail!) yesterday, and much improved visibility. Maximum temperature 19C

Today from the Penzance webcam (10:00)2026-04-28 10_03_21-Capture.png
Bit of a breeze now, and a little cloud passing the Lizard point.

Back to the wind today, over 50mph at Lands End. Scillonian Ferry back from Scilly cancelled.

Stayed dry all day, but a very unstable looking sky at times. A few large drops of rain in the last 30 minutes. Might be enough to stop the dry sandy soils from blowing around.

"Scillonian Ferry back from Scilly cancelled."

Ferries seem to cancel when there is the slightest breath of wind.  That was one of the main reasons I moved from the Isle of Mull.

I know little about seafaring, but in a way, I had a parallel job as an airline pilot.  If I had been continually cancelling flights due to minor weather issues, I could be sure my boss would have called me in for an explanation.

I estimate that I carried more than a million passengers during my career.  Not one was injured.

There was a real issue this time Jack, though I accept that things are sometimes cancelled when there seems little reason.

The reason wasn't the open sea state as such, though at the time the wind was gusting >50mph (even on the land) but the wind direction.

All major ports in north and west Cornwall are sheltered from the W & SW for a very good reason (Padstow, Newquay, St Ives, Penzance/Newlyn, Falmouth etc.) A problem arises during an E gale, which this was just offshore. The SCIII is flat bottomed because of the shallow conditions, both at Penzance & Scilly, which makes it roll & makes docking tricky in rough conditions. With the wind gusting to around 50 mph on the lighthouse pier Penzance (46mph at my sheltered site set well back from the sea front), and the waves coming over the pier, the sailing could not go ahead.  The prom was awash.  Even if the ship had docked, the passengers would have been bombarded by pebbles and weed flying over the pier.

I used to work for the Steamship Co., who run both the Scillonian & Skybus flights from Lands End, Newquay & Exeter. There were many occasions when the sailing went ahead and ambulances had to meet the ship due to minor injuries & severe sea sickness. It's complete open Atlantic off Lands End, many (not all!) Scottish ferries are between Islands, so there is some shelter.
