Altnaharra down to - 14° C at sunset.

My attempt to illustrate 'cold' in a video.

Stuck at home for the seventh day due to sloping icy driveway.

Didn't it record minus 27.2 Celsius in December 1995? That's not likely tonight though somewhere possibly Braemar might get nearly as low as minus 20 C. But Altnaharra will doubtless get below minus 14.5 C tonight.

In January 1982, Braemar got down to -27C, the same as the later record in Altnaharra.

While I wasn't in Braemar that January night, I was at the time living further down the Dee Valley at Banchory where it go down to -25C.  There was no wind and when I poked my head out the door, it didn't feel as cold as I had expected.

I was in Wolverhampton in Jan '82 and it got very cold at night after the snow (15 in) stopped, with freezing fog as well. Though not as bitterly cold as Newport, Shropshire. In late December 1995 I was in a part of coastal north Wales that saw 6 in/15 cm of snow and some unusually cold, clear nights.

Met Office on X expecting Altnaharra to be colder than Braemar even though further west. And BBC News website reporting minus 16.1 C in Altnaharra earlier this evening.

I awoke at 6 a.m. to minus 10C.  But not all that far away at Grantown-on-Spey, it's minus 15C.

After I've finished this warming coffee, I am returning to bed wearing four layers of clothes thick socks, duvet with blanket on top and a head covering.

Meanwhile, my son is somewhere over the Pacific on his way to have two weeks of summer warmth in New Zealand.
Auckland, his first stop there, forecast to be around +24C.

Lucky for some, but I was doing the equivalent myself (East Africa) almost 60 years ago.

And another bizarre temperature report.

My daughter Polly, a pilot with easyJet, is shortly departing Gatwick at MINUS 5C for Akureyri Iceland at PLUS 5C

At my home in north Scotland, it is -10C.  Still stuck at home for the 8th day due to steep icy driveway,
This is getting serious as reserves of booze are dangerously low!

Parts of Scotland should be much less cold by tomorrow.
