The maximum temperature at Alert last week of 21°C was an absolute record maximum. Alert is at latitude 82.5° north and only 500 miles from the North Pole. Thanks to P.Chortik in the UKSW newsgroup for alerting me to it (pardon the pun) which had passed me by, possible because we were having so much fun hacking the lawn back and painting the house whilst dodging the rain. Here are the plotted obs for the month so far at Alert.

Looking at the Wikipedia climate stats for Alert it looks like July ( and every other month the sun is above the horizon) is usually a very sunny, and high temperatures (although not quite as high as 21°C) can occur. Especially with the help of moderate to fresh SW wind blowing down from high ground to the southwest. That high ground is of course an ice field, but presumably this wouldn't inhibit the foehn effect, or would it?
