The 1st proper SE gale of the extended winter looks pretty much certain now. The recent 2 named storms were offshore, it was blown pretty much flat during Eunice. This one could result in the prom being closed for the 1st time this year with gusts >60mph forecast. The Jubilee Pool is closed, the cafe shutting & boarding up at noon, all the sandbags out.

The good news is the tides are exceptionally small (the smallest of the year I think without checking) and high tide is noon, before the really bad conditions.

So hopefully some exciting weather without any real damage, which is what we like!

Very unpleasant out now. Minack webcam 13:30. Porthcurno & Pedn Vounder beaches a mass of white foam.

Just as well the tides are so small. Not the day for a stroll on the beach. Recent gust of 64mph at Lands End, wind steadily increasing still. My garden's gradually accumulating bits off trees.

69mph gust at John Chappell's site near Lands End as the front went through. Very sharp drop in the wind as it veered.

An hour later it's still raining heavily, and quite cold now, but the excitement's over (as far as Cornwall is concerned).

A lively wind but only 54 mph peak gust ( compare with 77 mph during Eunice) at Plymouth Mt Batten, surprisingly only 50 mph at Culdrose.
Worst of the rain was due to one rainband moving south to north. Missed the other bands that you seem to have got in W Cornwall Graham.
7 mm in the gauge of which 2 mm from last night.

I'm surprised at the Culdrose figures, they are down even on Camborne. On St Mary's the MEAN speed exceeded 50mph with gusts >70mph. After a lull it's now gusting 60mph again out on the Islands. I haven't ventured outside recently to check my rainfall, but 'm sure it's >10mm.

I've noticed before that Culdrose records very strong winds in an easterly, but below predictions in a southerly, I don't know the position of their anemometer.

I'm very impressed the way models now pick up the developments like this so many days in advance, and get the track and central pressure of the low virtually spot on.

Still much better weather on the way.
