I seem to recall that the same thing happened in the Stranraer area some years ago and it was concluded that the cause was the Northern Ireland ferries inbound to Cairnryan when there was an atmospheric inversion that trapped the sound. That humming in Lewis might be annoying but I would suggest, hardly mysterious.
