The Met Office say in their press release:

"To ensure we are in line with the US National Hurricane Centre naming conventions, we are not going to include names which begin with the letters Q, U, X, Y and Z. This will maintain consistency for official storm naming in the North Atlantic"

I don't see any real consistency in this storm naming saga across Europe.

We have the French, Norwegian and Germans doing their thing and the Met Office and its affiliates doing another, with the added complication of ex-hurricanes from the Americans.

I suppose in a way it reflects the underlying nationalistic divisions that still remain across Europe.

Perhaps the only answer is to get Eurovision to sort out the naming convention.

I'm not sure of the pronunciation of C, M, P and R.  I guess I'll have to wait for the storms.

But since a cyclonic storm affecting the UK is a completely different phenomena to a hurricane, why does it have to have the same naming convention? Do Asian and Australasian countries use the same convention as the NHC does for storms forming in the eastern Pacific? Do storms that form near Hawaii follow the same convention? What an odd decision.

Not only is a mid-latitude storm a different baby from a tropical hurricane but it has much less of an identity and can disappear rather quickly.  Naming mere Lows is therefore rather inappropriate. And what's wrong with Queenie, Ursula, Xavier,Yannick and Zebedee?  And where are Gethin and Gwyneth?  What nonsense it all is - I dunno.
