Although I had wondered about the possibility of severe storms, official forecasts seem to ignore.  Maybe I just hadn't listened carefully enough.

Yes, it was in the forecast - there are a couple of linked articles on the page you linked to.

I had seen storms forecast for the north Midlands and Pennines, but didn't see any mention of Wiltshire.

There was a yellow storm lasting till midnight - but then another was issued lasting till 4 am Thursday (which was probably the timeframe in question). I can't find the map in question but unlike the earlier warning this one covered the western Midlands as well as parts of Wales, whilst the area of southern England included was quite narrow.
