10th January 1982,  when it dropped to -27°C.  I lived in Banchory at the time, where it didn't fall below a balmy -24 °C.  I remember the evening of 9th January 1982, as there was a splendid total lunar eclipse under crystal-clear skies.

The next morning, Sunday 10th January, I drove to Braemar and met the weather recorder (a schoolteacher, I seem to recall) who had taken the midday readings.  It was -12°C

Here is a photo taken that day.  (I am scanning old colour slides). The weather station has now been moved a short distance from the village centre.

Jack, thank you for sharing that fascinating photograph, a snippet of meteorological history.  Apart from seeing what Braemar looked like on that morning, it is a valuable record of exactly where the screen was in those days.   Surely the nights are colder (on radiation nights) at the new site down by the river.  PS I'm quite impressed that your car started!

More slides from the incredible winter of 1982. (not necessarily on 10th January)

I lived in Banchory, Deeside.  I realized the potential for burst pipes and removed the hatch to the interior roof space to allow heat there.  I think I was the only house on the estate that didn't have a burst pipe.  Using heat to warm an empty space might have been expensive, but it probably saved money in the long term.
