Torrential rain & large hail in a prolonged shower (17:15-18:00). Also 2 rumbles of fairly distant thunder.

Looking at the lightning maps, there were a few flashes just off Lands End.

The large hail seemed to be made up of 3 or 4 more normal sized hailstones frozen together. This was obvious by studying the impact on the velux, where they tended to break up into their component parts on impact.

Bit of excitement.

After the thunder & large hail a stormy night with frequent rain/ hail showers & very squally winds. Not a night to have a velux window in the bedroom!

Some very strong gusts associated with the showers, which were prolonged so the strong winds were sustained for some minutes. The strongest gust I've seen locally 78mph at St Ives, well above anything recorded 2 nights previously.

In Penzance 15.2mm of rain recorded in the 24 hours to 09:00.

Still a nice 'west is best' anticyclonic spell coming up.
