Wind (as opposed to sea) conditions are as bad on the sea front in Penzance as at any time last winter, it's the first real S-SE blow for a very long time. Lot's of branches down as trees are in leaf, and it's not the common strong wind direction. I had to detour back from Morrisons, and it was difficult to stand in the car park.
I think wind, not rain, is the feature here. Despite our thundertorm a week ago, rainfall for September (until now) is 110% of normal. May was 71%, June 52%, July 95%, August 94% The rivers are still quite low and the local reservoir is just 51% full (lower than last year).
So in Cornwall, and I think at least the western half of Devon, it's wind not rain that's the issue.
Recent mean and gust speeds on Scilly. (MetO)
I'm with Len on this one, conditions are now quite severe, windwise. A bit's just blown off my conservatory and there's a largish branch down in the garden. Rainfall amounts fairly insignificant so far, horizontal drizzle mainly. I'd say the south coast of Devon & Cornwall could do with an amber warning, and I normally say warnings are thrown out too liberally.
