In Central England the mean temperature of the Summer [JJA] so far is 1°C above the long-term average, which currently makes it the 17th warmest of the last 138 summers for the period from 1 June to 22 July. So pretty warm, but not in the same league as 1976 or 2003 for the same time, but of course there is still almost six weeks left to run of the meteorological summer and August might be a sizzler! Below is a chart comparing maximum temperatures of 2016 with the summer of 1976 forty years before, of course the data for July is still provisional but there’s still no missing the recent hot day of Tuesday the 19th. The way the anomalies for this summer are currently (maximum +0.71°C minimum +1.35°C) it points to warm nights being the main driver rather than warm days, in fact maximums ran below average for much of the period between the 24th of June and 15th of July.

It's a pity there isn't a 'like' button on google groups. Well done Bruce. Did you take the CET figures from Phil Eden's site?

Paul

You cut me to the quick!

One of the first programs that I wrote in BBC basic when I first got a BBC model A in 1983 was an applcation called CET. That necessitated typing in 12x288 monthly values from the original paper. No offence to Philip Eden but I am Mr CET, and seriously thought about shoving Tim Legg (the guy who looks after these long term climate data series) under a bus so I could apply for his job when I worked at the MO. There is very little I have not researched about CET and I monitor it daily - but you must know that right?

Check out my blog for confirmation: http://xmetman.com

Bruce.

'Mr. CET'. I retain loyalties to Phil, even though he is ill and not maintaining his data, but I bow to your website information and I'm glad the CET is in good hands. I confess, I didn't know and I should have done. I do now!

I haven't looked at last year's poorish summer to see if this recent spell was matched here but just ended 10 consecutive days with 24+C maxima.
