GFS gust forecast for 21:00 & midnight.2024-04-08 19_45_21-Capture.png

Named storm in France, rather glossed over by the BBC forecaster at 18:00 saying turning quite windy again, especially on western coasts and hills (waves hand vaguely in the direction of Wales). Could be a bit more precise, but it is a light entertainment show these days, so there may be some spray on roads if it rains, do stay away from large waves. Don't go out unless there's a really good band on at The Pirate.

The NW has just set in at Lands End

Here in Penzance it's gone from basically calm to a good F6 in around 10 minutes.

Posting this just before the excitement may occur, as if it gets above 70mph in west Penwith, we are likely to loose power (overhead cables). Just had a really strong gust.
Of course, it could still be a bit of a damp squid, but it's looking unlikely.

Interesting little depression

Recent gust to 73mph at Gwennap, > 60mph and a F8-9 at John Chappell's site near Lands End, so getting pretty windy now. Lights flickering rather so. .

Good night

Not a damp squid in the end. Gust of 56mph in Penzance, the highest since 58mph on 2/11/23 and the highest in 2024 by 10mph (beating 46mph on 1/3/24). The Saturday event barely registered as a wind event, though the sea conditions were something else.

Strongest gusts locally 83mph at Gwennap, 69mph near Lands End, and well >60mph at Culdrose. Penlee lifeboat was out in it yesterday, escorting a boat back to Penzance. All ended well.

The swell wasn't as powerful as Saturday, but it was clearly very very rough and it coincided with spring tides, so coastal flooding. Damage to the sea wall at Porthleven, beach huts washed away at Falmouth etc.

Much smaller swell now with no deep depression to the west. Both the freight ship & Scillonian will be off to Scilly this afternoon, for the first time since last Wednesday! THe last of the Easter visitors will finally be able to escape.

After 2 major events, the beach has largely gone at Sennen, it always quickly returns

Exciting & noisy night.

Hopefully that's it for a few months

A thoroughly wet squid I would say.
It certainly wasn't a damp squib.

Noisy gale for a couple of hours around 2-3 am south London. And what about all that coastal flooding - high spring tides and onshore gales.
