I went swimming at my local beach yesterday afternoon and the surfers were out. Something you don't normally see in the summer. There were 6 to 8 foot waves at times kicking the sand up and clouding the water after weeks of gin clear, glassy calmness.
The strong thermocline had gone and the water felt warm down to at least 2 metres. I took the sea temperature and it was 22°C. The sea has 'warmed out' and now without the normal warm pool. Quite remarkable really. As you approached the sea you could feel the humidity coming off it, especially during the rougher spells. That reminded me of the northern coasts of Crete when the Etesian Wind was blowing strongly in July turning the sea rough.
It looks as if we won't make 30°C today after a week of +30°C days. Getting close though with 28.6°C at 13:30.
All in all, it's turning out to be a rather interesting summer. Could do with a drop of rain though.
