Where I live is not directly in the lee of mountains in a southwesterly. But this Moray Firth photo shows how the cloud can break in these situations.

Further south the Aboyne area being downwind of the Cairngorms, gliders were able to use the mountain wave to around 13,000 feet.
This is an in-flight photo near Aboyne.
