In these sort of conditions the forecasts for SW England always suggest that cloud will be most persistent near coasts in the west.

Except for when the only cloud is sea/coastal fog lying at sea level, this is usually not the case. The most likely spots to brighten are where the wind is onshore.

Today's a good example. Once any mist had cleared by mid morning, Penzance saw much thicker cloud than Sennen near Lands End.

Mid afternoon

The thicker 'inland' cloud spreading out over the north coast be thin, and over Mount's Bay. Interesting persistent curl in the cloud to the north of Scilly. The tip of the Lizard did well for sun until cloud drifted off the land during the afternoon.

Tomorrows forecast similar
"Low cloud will lift to give very warm spells of sunshine, especially in the afternoon. However, cloud could linger in parts of the west."

Might, then again . .

With SW water now dumping 99.9% of their sewage in the sea, you get this sort of weed where the sewage collects.

Mousehole, which used to be a lovely spot for swimming, not since SW Water upgraded the sewage system, with a new pipe that has leaked gunge ever since. They've had a couple of half hearted attempts to pretend to fix it. In the end they gave up as it wasn't a 'bathing area'

Not a bathing area

Not any more. Sad really.

Persistent cloud all day here too Graham though it was thin enough to activate the sunshine recorder at times. First cloudy day for a while.

This month's sunshine is now up to 203 hours which is a little above my long term average for this point in the month.

Yesterday's UV reached the highest of the year so far at 9.5 which was a bit of a surprise.

National Gliding Championships at Aston Down near Stroud couldn't have a contest today due to persistent low cloud that didn't clear as hoped.

Didn't clear properly here on the SW Devon Coast.
Rather damp and misty all day.
No onshore wind strong enough to clear it.

No mist here today, in fact the Lizard point's been visible from Penzance. Some cliff tops & hills just in the cloud this morning, affected Culdrose & Lands End airport..

Currently a very thin covering of cloud with glimpses of blue, and calm.

The prom 20:00, very benign

Might be a nice sunset undercutting the cloud at Sennen later

Hoping for some proper sun tomorrow.

On yesterday evenings BBC forecast the graphic behind (which these days is worth watching with the sound off) showed the typical brokencloud over the sea tending to disperse whilst cloud built inland. The forecaster said 'once again cloud persisting over western coasts'. Perhaps replace the  forecaster by AI that would learn more than standard often incorrect cliches. You would never think from forecasters that the tip of Cornwall is one of the sunniest spots in the UK. AI might have had different training. I know a chap at Sennen who's throroughly P*****d off due to affect on trade.

Onshore breeze today will helpfully keep the thicker cloud that develops over the land at bay.
