Much windier than Storm Eowyn in Cornwall.  Gale force even in Penzance (onshore SSE). Gusts to 84mph at Gwennap @ 8:49.  61mph mean speed near Lands End at much the same time.

Very big south coast swell, luckily very small tides. The strength of the wind has stopped the tide going out much below the half tide mark.  Live from Newlyn. The rise around low tide probably a wave setup surge. (Couple of sets of large waves raising sea level near the shore for a few minutes).

I thought for a moment those wave riders weren't going to duck!

Almost as impressive as the Severn Bore.

That video is from 13 years ago.  Oh Graham - using library images ;)

I didn't mean to give the impression it was today, it clearly wasn't for several reasons. I just thought many wouldn't know what a wave set-up surge looks like, it was a good example. The tidal graph was today.

Weather & sea conditions near high tide yesterday at Marazion. Visibility again badly affected by spray, even miles inland.

Decent thunderstorm last night (3:30ish) First large hail I've recorded for quite some time, ground was white. Lightning strike caused a house fire in Newquay. Only a few miles from the tornado damage of last Thursday.

Interesting times.

I love this from Graham:
"Decent thunderstorm last night ......... Lightning strike caused a house fire in Newquay."

I wonder if those Newquay residents  would agree with the use of the word "decent"?

Almost certainly not.

But it's a funny thing extreme weather. I know members/ex members of the Sennen lifeboat crew, who have taken fairly extreme risks and, sadly, people affected by the Penlee lifeboat disaster. It doesn't stop extreme weather being exciting. Pretending it isn't doesn't help people unfortunately adversely affected by it.

What I hate is the dehumanisation of tragedy, so the plight of desperate people trying to get some sort of life away from poverty and fear becomes 'stop the boats'.

"Decent thunderstorm last night ......... Lightning strike caused a house fire in Newquay."

I of course knew what you meant Graham.  But another word beginning with a 'D' would have been ideal.

"Dramatic thunderstorm last night."

I'm just pulling your leg :)  I did initially think the video was from the same day though.
