It looks like the weather for first week of June will remain rather cool and unsettled judging by the latest sequence of forecast charts from the Met Office.

The weather for the rest of June doesn't look particularly great either. It looks like the 'curse of the cold trough' may have dampened any possibility of a flaming June this year.

Down here in the Surrey drought zone, those charts look welcome at face value - slack cyclonic situations at this time of year, masses of instability, heavy rain etc.  But in view of recent events when rain or showers have failed, I'm not going to be so sure. Weds rain looks like just watering the North Sea and then hitting NE Scotland.

Down here in Penzance we had the driest May I've recorded (since 1991) despite 14mm in 40 minutes on 10th. Extremely localised, a virtually stationary sea breeze convergence deluge, something Cornwall's famous for with the 2 opposing coasts.

Anyway, the droughts ended. Woken by heavy rain around 04:30, then again by thunder & heavy rain about 05:15. Still raining, but just steady. Total of 17mm so far, but more to come.

1st thunder of the year. (I must check if that's a record wait) There were 3 days with thunder last November.

Signs of another change in a week or so's time? Certainly hinted at for a couple of days.

Rain still apparently hopping over us and missing us here, despite gloomy skies.

No rain this morning - the dry spell continues.

Jan to May rainfall here was just 55% of last year's amount (and 68% of my 20 year average here). No significantly drier such period in the last 20 yrs here (a few mm less in 2005 and 2011).

GFS 06Z is suggesting 80-100mm+ over the entire country in the next 2 weeks.

Not good - it's as if the weather has somehow picked up the mood of the whole country at the moment.
