It may be obvious, but what do the letters in the bottom left of the GFS charts mean?

I think I understand "NW" but not "CNW" and "AW".

Also, is the fact that some a circular and other elliptical significant?

Sorry, they are the individual Lamb Weather Types that I guessed each chart mapped to.

AW is anticylonic westerly and CNW is cyclonic northwesterly.
