I've had problems posting and to an extent, gave up.  For some reason, the old familiar format of the group is no longer there.
I don't think this will work as I'm trying to send as an email.

  Today full-on autumn.

I'm still not able to post direct to the group, only via email.  Trying this time to embed an image in the text

Jack,
It seems you have been put into the new Groups format.
If you click on the cog wheel icon at the top of the page a menu pops up.
There you can click on 'Return to classic Google Groups.'
They ask you why, just click OK unless you want to give them feedback.

On the new Google Groups (I keep switching between them) things are different, whether they are better or worse I'm still not sure, but I'm  gradually swinging more towards the new layout.

The paper clip allows you to browse for a drag a file.  The icon to the right to insert photos. Once again you can browse or drag, and it has a 'best fit' option which was missing from the old Google Groups, so you don't have to be quite so careful with the size of the image.

It's probably as well to get used to the new layout, I'm sure the old one will go in the not too distant future. That's why Google keeps switching you to it.

I agree Graham.
Putting photos on is a bit  easier and you can stiil copy and paste a graphic from Excel.

Not sure though how you put a label on a new post though. If you click a label (eg anomalies) from the left margin it lists all the posts with that label from the past.
And where are the smilies?

I'm back on classic view (thanks for the help).
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems to be lost on Google.  Programmers love to fiddle - I often feel, just to prove that they are doing something to justify their pay.
If Google programmers really want to do something useful, they could work on the absurdly low contrast of Google Maps.

I find it difficult to work out how to reply to a specific post rather than getting added on at the end of the thread. Also editing after posting doesn't seem to come up on any of my options.

My understanding is that editing of posts has to be allowed in the group settings, though I haven't really looked into it. Perhaps Freddie knows about this?

Editing of your own posts is definitely allowed in the group settings.  I'm using the classic view, and the edit post function is accessed via the drop-down arrow at the top right of your message.
I am using classic view because I'm finding the new view is very difficult to use on mobile devices (it isn't especially easy in classic view).

EDIT: I have just switched to the new UI and couldn't find the "allow editing of posts" setting.  So I turned to Google search, and found this thread: https://support.google.com/groups/thread/61561135?hl=en (TL;DR: the option hasn't been implemented yet [as of July 2020] in the new interface)

Just doing a test to see what one can do in the new layout. Let's try adding a H0606.jpgpicture - small size. As already stated you can alter the size. But there's a maximum size (MBytes), does anyone know what that is? As Len says, can't see smilies.
You seem to be able to reply - I replied to Freddie's post - where does it appear. Here's some guidance about what's in and not in the new groups. It appears that they will be adding stuff as they go along.#

EDIT. Can't find edit in the new groups (I've reverted to the old groups to do this). I omitted the links I mentioned so I could edit the reply to add them. Ironic really. https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2020/05/new-google-groups-generally-available.html. There are links to more details on that link. Can't see smilies here either....

Yes it seems there is no menu to edit post in new view like there was in classic. Bit of a basic and big omission for a world dominating software platform!

Despite them trumpeting labels in their blurb,
I still cannot see how to label a new conversation as you can in classic.
Not that it is that important, just stupid of google.
Am I missing something?

I have reported it and fedback.
I see from the forum, other people have questioned labels.
No action yet from the the google team  though.

Looks like Freddie has to turn labels on in the new groups - https://support.google.com/a/answer/9664435?hl=en

Quoted from your link:

If you use tags in classic Groups,

(we do)

shared labels are automatically enabled in new Groups, and any tags are converted to labels for their respective groups. You don't need to do anything.

But when I hover over the labels icon it says I don't have permission to update labels. Am I doing something wrong?

Okay, I've just switched to the new interface and confirmed that "Enable shared labels" is checked.

I think the message you saw is relating to adding a new label to the existing list, which you can't do.

I'll have a look around to see if I can find anything out about this.

Using the old interface, you can add tags to a conversation you are just starting.  Using the new interface, you can only add labels to existing conversations.  I can do this - I have just labelled this conversation with the "OT" label.  It will be interesting to find out whether you can do this, or whether it is a purely administrative function.  The "label" icon appears at the top right of the conversation you are viewing between the "report abuse" icon (exclamation mark in a circle) and the "delete" icon (dustbin).

Yes, as I was saying.
If you want to add a tag/label to new conversation you can't.
Where in the little window are the labels?
Where do they appear where you can choose one to put on your new conversation before posting?

That's because, as you say, you can't add a label to a new conversation - only existing conversations.  This is different to the old interface.

That is why I said "hopefully", as I think when using the new interface, adding labels is an "administrative" function.  See the "Test of labels" thread.
