1st thunderstorm since March yesterday evening. Quite a good one, went directly overhead.

No warning of thunder, but luckily I had carefully rehearsed the the appropriate action to take in such a dangerous scenario. Look out the window, then grab these images on the phone.

The times relate to the radar animation, not the lightning, which was largely 21:45-22:15 and was associated with the bright echoes just to the SW of Penzance in the first image.

I would say about 50% cloud to cloud, supported by the big bang to starting with a rumble ratio.

It thundered in March, but this was the first proper storm of 2024.

Not that much rain, 9mm in the 24 hours to 09:00 today, but there were some other sharp showery bursts making up that total.

I've just searched Cornwall LIve News (Cornishman online) for thunderstorm Cornwall. Loads of results for thunder warnings (last one appears to be 12/7/24) but no report of when it actually thundered. Sadly that's the way of things now, weather events without a warning never get coverage, warnings which fail to materialise due. Not quite fake news, but as good as.

The heavy rain and thunder scared the life out of those at the Minack theatre.
Had to abandon the evening performance of French Lieutenant's Woman early at 9.40 with still 45 mins left.
They all fled like drowned rats.
