.

Yesterday, was the coldest June 28th in the last 139 years of the daily CET series. The mean maximum temperature of just 14.5°C was -4.24°C below the long-term average. The cold day across the country, particularly in the wet east, is what prompted me to write this Colder than Christmas! article yesterday

Statisticians interpret please.
Is 0.065 degC / decade cooling significant?  Or would that statistically be within normal variation?

Am I allowed to be a pedant?  That Met Office graph (top left) says cooling - 0.065 C /decade.  A negative cooling is in fact a warming, I am sure not what was meant.  Pedant hat removed.

A cursory look at: https://skyvector.com/ and the temperatures worldwide today suggest that the northern hemisphere is cooler than recent days (admittedly a very broad unscientific look). I find it difficult to understand that everywhere can be cooler: there seem to be few compensating warmer areas except possibly northern Russia.  Even the Sahara is enjoying a cold spell.  Daua Adrar is - by normal standards - perishing cold at a mere 48C.  By comparison, somewhere in Iran yesterday I saw a 52C.

Jack -  keeping warm in my centrally heated bungalow!

It didn't seem like a particularly extreme day in anyway.  Was June 28th's coldest day record a particularly weak record compared to surrounding days?

Just putting my pedantic hat on for second, a particular bugbear of mine is when people quote negative negative anomalies.  -4.24C below average would actually be 4.24C above average in the same way that is you subtract -4.24 from zero you get +4.24.

OK, I see what you mean, a double negative in fact.

Jack

I take you point about the double negative anomaly.

I'm not saying that all places in the world are cooler, or anywhere else come to that, just that a linear trend for all the 28th of June since 1878 in the Central England Temperature series is negative.

Bruce.

It was the latest date I have recorded such a low temperature (10.5C near Dundee).

Are you sure it isn't the earliest?  After all, the evenings are now drawing in.
