Camborne is very keen on reporting mist / fog when it's hazy.

Currently (15:00)

At 11am Camborne Report:-  Mist,  No cloud, humidity 55%.
It keeps doing this. Still reporting mist now (15:00).

Glorious (hazy) day here in Penzance. No real sea breeze despite the temperature topping 16C for the first time this year. Back on Wednesday, when Bude hit 19C, we had a fresh along/onshore easterly, which kept the temperature down to 15C.

SST at the Penzance buoy 11.5C, about 2C above normal. 11.3C in the open ocean off Scilly.

I had a vague memory that I had volunteered to find out for you more about the persistence with reporting mist - but I obviously didn't!  So I have asked questions now.  Hopefully I won't forget to report back to you!

The reason is that the sensors work in isolation so there is no way for the sensor to allow a check of the RH to determine the mist/haze difference.

There is some post-processing done before the observation is archived, but there is no way to do this in real time.

I thought the sensor was just looking at aerosol in its path and must be calibrated to make a judgement between haze and mist. It is not designed to take an RH measurement. So it is going to get things wrong sometimes.

Yes, that's how it works.  However, I'm sure there used to be an orchestration/logic software layer between sensor readings and their encoding into the final report.  This is the point at which the RH could be used to intelligently pick haze/mist.  I'm sure that logic is applied to hourly/daily rainfall totals such that when precipitation is detected but no "tip" of the bucket occurs then a trace is recorded.  I'm speaking to our tech team who manage the system so I can find out more.

Thanks Freddie, I'd be very interested to know.

It would be good if there was also some logic software which prevented an excellent visibility forercast for coastal areas during a strong to gale on onshore wind.

Prolonged sunshine & deep blue sky today made it feel very pleasant along the sheltered south coast. Penlee Park Penzance 14:45 (unenhanced)

A dry (makes a change), mild month with normal sunshine.
