"In a post on X, external, the Met Office showed the differences in the weather between some parts of the UK on Monday, with Charlwood in Surrey basking in 29.6C heat while Sennybridge in Wales shivered in just 4.9C."

Eh yes.  Apples and Bananas.  Day max, night min.

They probably meant it but without an explanation the figures are quite meaningless.  Maybe not everybody in the Met Office knows all about meteorology but is well versed in the art of sensationalism.

They also said with the high temperatures the UV would be high. I won't say any more on that.

Please take care Tudor, as there's a thunderstorm warning for your area, so please do all these things.

Also, for those about to suffer a heatwave
Only go out in the sun if absolutely necessary, if you must remember the sunblock.
Don't jump into the sea, the temperature shock might kill you.
Avoid alcohol & caffeine!! Somebody should have told the queue at the Old Success yesterday that bit of information, I'd have got served quicker.

Do we really need all this stuff, it's so patronising. It's getting to the state that whatever the weather is we need some sort of warning & advice about coping with it. If it's likely to be really severe in any way, let us know & leave it at that.

I do wish I had been warned.  In shirtsleeves, I stepped outside just now with coffee (yes, the dangers of coffee had been highlighted) in my hand.  Even though the sun was shining, and the temperature was 16C, I was ill prepared for the horrendous wind chill in the 2 knot wind.

I hurried back indoors, but in my haste to escape the bitter cold, I nearly tripped over the door sill. There had been no warning about the danger of door sills.  At least, I did manage not to spill any of that lethal coffee.

Personal update.  After covering enough distance, I presume it will become Sir Jack.

Well, Graham, I think I'll be OK, having survived the Horsham Hailstorm of 5th Sept 1958.  Survived? It was brilliant!  The best  and most violent storm I have ever seen.  Spoilt for life at the age of 15.

Gotta go to the shops now.  It's cloudy but I think I'll be OK.

"They also said with the high temperatures the UV would be high. I won't say any more on that."

I'll say something instead!

Too true Graham, all the talk of high UV over the last few days just shows the misleading rubbish spewed out by the likes of the BBC and the Met Office. The hottest days this week (Wednesday & Thursday) had the lowest UV (maximum of 5.9) of the entire summer so far, despite blue skies. Today (Friday) the UV was back up to 7.4 in the slightly fresher air and lower temperatures.

Recent warmth saved this July from being cooler than my eLTA. Very little rain since the 10th July, everything has dried up again for the second time this summer.

The highest UV at Camborne this year seems to have been 8.5 on 4th July, a cool breezy day with sunny spells, Maximum 19.9C. Temperature at ground level is irrelevant, it's time of year and the general synoptic setup, pollution/dust levels etc that matter. Perhaps they think people are only outdoors when it's over 25C? I suppose with many office bound meteorologists, that may be the case, for the rest of us . . .

It is a shame this sort of thing is not checked by a scientist with some basic physics knowledge before it is broadcast.
There are trained meteorologists on the forecasting bench but somehow good science can escape them and we end up with some journalistic nonsense.
Too much to ask for I supppose because it makes no difference to the average Jo Public.

Nothing wrong with what the Met Office did - they just did their usual tweet showing 24 hour extremes data for the UK - max, min, sunshine and rainfall.  They do this all the time - absolutely nothing "sensationalism" here.  This was the tweet:

As Jack alluded to - this was poorly reported by the BBC who seemed to imply the temperatures were recorded at the same time, by using the phrase "meanwhile...".

So nothing at all to do with Met Office sensationalism.
