The second best aurora I have seen the finest being from high over the North Sea.

Curtains, searchlights and a 'false dawn' (when the sun was still 25 degrees below horizon)

No colour with the naked eye though : rods (for night vision) do not detect colour, merely light.  Photographs of aurora give a false impression how colorful aurora is.  The display would need to be very bright (probably higher latitudes) to see impressive colours with the naked eye.

Down 'ere along the south coast of Devon the aurora was just about visible very low down on the northern horizon. This is a photo I took with my cheapy mobile phone, so not the best but I could see it with my eyes and yes, I could see the green and magenta colours albeit it was very faint. I eat lots of carrots.....
