There may well be some very threatening weather across the lower 48 states in the medium and extended ranges. But for now, the major storms are spinning around in the Pacific Basin, with major ice, snow, and Arctic cold largely staying along and above the Canadian border. We have seen some fairly hot temperatures in the Southwest and Great Plains, but the breakdown of the Sonoran heat ridge implies no worse than very warm readings in much of the nation, at least when it is not raining. The upper dynamics are not all that impressive over the next five days, just enough to trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms by midweek across the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic regions. We will need this respite from weather extremes to prepare for what could be a very challenging convective outbreak over the central and eastern chambers of the USA April 3 - 6, and perhaps again April 11 - 14. But chances for winter-type cold are mostly gone below Interstate 90, and the risk for hot air may be as near as early/mid May.
