MONTHLY FORECASTS
NOVEMBER
November has a mostly mild or normal appearance based in temperature comparisons and a mostly semizonal flow. But keep in mind that the month may be punctuated by a storm out of the Pacific Northwest, and a late-season tropical cyclone strike could occur along either the Gulf Coast or Eastern Seaboard, in conjunction with a mid-latitude storm and/or frontal structure. The ridging in northern Canada and Alaska may contribute to a polar intrusion into the northern tier states.
DECEMBER
All of that Alaskan ridging and an emergent -NAO signature could create a window for a more meaningful polar intrusion in the second half of December. The warmth and dryness in the western and Great Plains states will be the driver in the pattern, however. Note the disturbances emerging off of Asia are deepening and dropping in latitude over the Pacific Basin. That may indicate chances for a significant winter storm through the Intermountain Region and Upper Midwest in the last week of the month, possibly the result of an Alberta Clipper.
