2-1-26 Week Ahead Outlook: Cold pattern to continue through week 1 with warmer trends noted for week 2. J.

Good evening everyone, below is your latest Week Ahead Outlook:

No video update this evening, but a few notes on trends over the weekend.

Click Here for Hi-Res PDF: 2_1_26_WAO

Week 1:

  • Continuing to favor above normal HDD's due to continued below normal temperatures from the midwest into the northeast. Multiple clipper systems will be responsible for expanding / increasing the snow pack, also aiding in below normal temperatures.
  • Thanks to a building ridge in the western US, Warmer air will continue to slowly shift eastward in the central plains towards the end of the week.

Week 2:

  • Latest weekend trends have intensified the ridge that will move warmer air from the western US into the central US. In combination with Pacific influences, this will extend the brief warmer period longer than we were originally anticipating.
  • A blocking pattern in the North Atlantic will continue to aid in keeping the northeastern US below normal in terms of temperatures. This will keep HDD's near normal for this week.
  • An impactful system will move across the Central to the Eastern US through the end of the week 2 period. We will need to watch this system closely for a potential winter storm.
  • Confidence remains lower in terms of timing for colder risks to return. The exact evolution of the polar vortex will have a major impact on if and how quickly colder risks can ultimately return for mid-late February. If the vortex evolves to the other side of the planet as current data indicates, it would pose a risk it may take longer to cool back off.
