Two cool female STEM activities in the news right now!

Would it be appropriate to post on the team Facebook page or send around to our students via email?  Can we create a female student email distribution list?

1.

Natalie Portman and Marvel Comics have announced the search for the “next Jane Foster,” for a program called the Ultimate Mentor Adventure.

If you don’t know Portman plays astrophysicist Jane Foster in the upcoming movie Thor.

Marvel wants to talk with young ladies in grades 9-12 about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and potential careers in a STEM field.

After learning about their chosen field each girl will create a 5 minute, unedited video about what they have discovered.

Entries will be accepted until October 20th, 2013

2.  Oct. 12th Girls and Science Event at the Science Museum

Aren't the Green Girls a part of this?

Saturday, October 12, 2013
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Girls & ScienceVisitors of all ages are invited to join FOX 9 and women scientists from throughout the area for the Girls & Science event at the Science Museum. This annual community event is designed to foster girls' enthusiasm for science by showcasing female scientists in wide-ranging fields of science and technology. It's a perfect opportunity for parents to introduce their daughters to the Twin Cities' best and brightest science professionals and show them that science is vital to our changing world.

I feel it would be absolutely appropriate to put this on the Facebook page.  These are cool!

Sounds good to me!

Almost makes me think that Marvel should be asked to have a STEM fair booth or at least send some handouts that could be put out promoting however they ARE having conversations about STEM with high school age girls..  Maybe that's silly but if they are serious about promoting STEM.....

I love this and totally sad I have plans to drive a tank that day.   It would be fun to take some girls to this event.  Easy fir me ti say, but could we creat a Team 2220 girls activity.  I think the green girls are too young.

I believe the Green Girls are headed to Girls in Science...and once they are 13, they can be a part of Facebook too.

Tamie are you going to that place in Hastings?  Sounds fun!  The article in today's Mpls paper mentions that older teenagers usually learn how to drive that heavy equipment quicker than other age groups - because of their video gaming.  That's probably the same thing that helps would-be robot drivers, as I've heard.
