Hey, everyone.

I apologize for not attaching the meeting minutes in my email last week.  I was scrambling to leave town for the week and just missed it.  Please find them attached here.

A few updates:

1.  Jim has decided to scrub the Sept. 5th Female Student Recruitment meeting so I'll work with him to find an alternative date.  Tanya and Stephanie, if any of your girls might be interested, could you give me some evening dates 6:30 to 8:30 that might work for them?  Sure would love to have them present.

2.  Also, Janet Rohlf has successfully worked with the DHMS 8th grade science teachers to bring them on board about doing a recruitment effort there.  (They suggested speaking to both female and male students at the same time, that's 430 students in the 8th grade.)  We have 2 choices:
  • We could take kids out of science class to come to the lecture room to see your presentation.  We can only fit about 100  or so kids in there, so we would have to do it 5 times approximately.  I know this would be difficult for you since your students wouldn't want to miss school.
  • We could have a one time presentation during flex time any day (Thursday would work well because it is science day, but any day could work)  We would only invite kids who have expressed an interest ahead of time.  We could show a video or presentation in class to everyone to encourage attendance.  I can also ask Eric Schmidt about encouraging gifted kids to attend and possibly even  7th grade teachers could recruit as well.
I'm guessing we'll want to choose the second option because this would involve pulling student presenters from their classes.  If you have any suggestions/comments, feel free to share them.  We'd need to pick a date to do this, and it looks like Thursdays might be the easiest.  Do we want middle school or high school presenters or both?  Makes sense to use Tanya and Steph's team members, if they attend the school where the presentation will be.  Does that work for your team?

A couple of needed items:

1.  Development of a Power Point for Eventual Female Recruitment Presentations (Both Evening Recruitment Presentation and DHMS/BHMS Presentations) - Theresa is working on this with media team staff.

2.  Commitment of Female Student Presenters for Presentations - Tanya and Steph?  Your girls?  If not, need to recruit EHS female students.

3.  Commitment of Female Students for Sept. 15th Eagan "Streets Alive" Event 1 to 4:00 p.m.:  Everyone?  Can I have your help finding at least 4 female robotics students?  2 per shift - 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m.  Or if not enough students and 2 are willing to work the entire 3 hour time slot, that could work, too.  Just thought we could give the students a break to go see the rest of the activities.

4.  Female Student Survey:  Candace - Jim agreed that the summer was not an ideal time to ask BHMS, DHMS and EHS leadership to send out a survey to female students.  We'll try again after the school year has started and inboxes are cleaned out.  We also could have paper surveys available at future recruitment events like presentations at the middle schools, recruitment nights and "Streets Alive" events.

5.  Next Meeting Date Set:  Please respond with your availability for a next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 17th at 6:30 at EHS Room 80.  (Thanks to those who've already responded about the date.)

I think that's it for now.  Looking forward to your input.  Thanks again for your interest and support of WIRED.  Hope you had a great end to your summer.

There appears to be a Lead Mentor Student meeting that same day. My calendar doesn't say where they are meeting but Jenny and/or I may have to attend that. If not, then I should be free that evening.
