There are four VSCO FILM packs in total. What one has to understand with VSCO FILM, is that a latter version is not a successor to the earlier ones. That means VSCO FILM 01 is as current as FILM 02, 03 and 04. Rather than replacing older pack versions, VSCO is releasing additional presets of different films and looks. FILM 01 has some modern films available and is the one being reviewed in this article. FILM 02 has additional films available, all of which can be considered classics. These films include Ilford Delta 3200 and the discontinued Kodak Portra VC/NC series. FILM 03 focuses mostly on instant films while the recently released 04 is all about punchy and contrasty slide (positive) films.

Having separate film packs means you can skip on those that interest you least and purchase only the most tempting ones. However, buying all the packs can be quite costly. It is good to know that for such customers Visual Supply Co offers substantial discounts. I must warn you that visiting VSCO FILM page will likely either make you want to buy all the packs, or never come back there again depending on your taste in the look of digital photographs.

A student and a wedding photographer with a passion for cinematography and writing. You'll see me buying film even when there's no food in the fridge. Follow me on Google+, Facebook or visit my wedding photography website to see some of my work.

This whole faux analog aesthetic is pathetic. People are spending hundreds on apps for retro overlays while the actual film stocks that these presets (attempt) to emulate are slowly disappearing from the market. An SLR and a lens can be had for peanuts, yet people are quicker to dismiss that shooting process in favor of hours on their asses in front of Lightroom. Why are you going to spend absurd amounts of money on a digital camera, only to apply these filters, when you could have just shot film instead? This is just lazy and unambitious.

Perhaps you are right. Although I try to judge the actual work and not methods, personally. And if you are the same at least sometimes in this regard, you might want to take a look at VSCO Grid. And then blush uncontrollably, because much better photographers than, say, me, are using the tools as well and seem to be fine.

If I sound a little harsh, forgive me. That is only because of the way you chose to express your opinion by putting down those who find VSCO not only of use, but a great, great way to save time on processing.

And now we touch the concept of subjectivity again. It allows me to save time, it makes things easier for me, and so I choose to use the VSCO tools. For me, it has nothing to do with film, but everything to do with the look itself, in isolation. I mentioned that in the article.

For the last time, forgive me for my lack of manners. I am certainly not on my best behavior and this conversation is not the best representation of the sort of person I am. I am being sincere. It is just that I have no tolerance for the narrow-minded, but I am working on it.

I get a lot of emails about how I get my digital images to look the way they do. The truth is that most of it is done in camera, properly exposed images shot in good light is what makes a good image, not the processing. With that said though, I do edit my images. Ever since VSCO film was released in 2011, I have used their presets for all my editing, I rarely even open photoshop these days.

VSCO Film 1,2 and 3 are presets for Lightroom and Photoshop. The three packs have a number of presets made to mimic different film stocks. I use all three packs, which presets I use generally depends on my own mood, i have used and use pretty much all of the presets, but I rarely use more than one colour and one black and white preset per wedding or shoot.

I also use another product from VSCO called VSCO Keys. VSCO Film cut my editing time in half, when I started using VSCO Keys, my editing time was cut in half again. In short VSCO Keys are keyboard shortcuts for Lightroom and using it has helped me speed things up dramatically.

Nice shots but VSCO makes them all look so flat and dull. Never could understand the big deal with this company. I have NIK and for the price you get so much more. But of course there is no right or wrong. Its your choice in the end.

Great work and VSCO samples. I want to ask you if you have try any collection from film-effect-photoshop? they say its same effect as VSCO, but Photoshop Actions. They have a free sample and want to ask any VSCO user if the final look is exactly the same. Thanks.

Are you a sales rep for VSCO? Very strange post for you to make on a wedding photographers blog. I would have thought your methods of turning out beautiful pics was your intellectual property and not really of interest to your customers. Perhaps there is more money to be made promoting ones own brilliance and taking sponsorship deals.

Hej Jonas!
Tack! Du har hrmed en ny lsare.

Thanks for sharing Jonas, inspiring as always. However, one thing that would be more interesting to hear about would be your social skills with the couples. How do you connect and communicate to get those shots, the presence, the looks? I would love to read a post on that. Sincerely, David

Thank you for breaking down the individual characteristics of each package. I have been thinking about #2 & 3 recently, but after reading your description, and seeing samples of your work with the three packs side by side helped a lot!

My workflow is based on VSCO Film Pack Presets. These are well-known presets but indeed, VSCO is based on a combination of presets and camera color profiles to achieve their manner to render pictures.

After 7.3 upgrade, Lightroom is complaining that the VSCO camera profiles are missing. When I try to apply again a VSCO preset, LR still complains that VSCO camera profile is missing. If i search in the new menu for Camera Profiles at the top of the Edit module, all the VSCO Camera profiles are missing.

You should be able to manually edit the preset (simple text editor is sufficient) to point to your preferred folder. From what I can see on my presets it's only the folder name that's listed not the full path. So, editing the preset is relatively easy. Even so, it's worth making a backup copy.

I have double checked and they are all in the correct folder structure for my Mac running 10.13.4. I also have the problem that every timeI launch Lightroom it tries to convert my presets and rename them. Every time is does this it fails and says," the following presets could not be renamed" and then it lists all the VSCO presets.

I'm also using High Sierra. By default, custom profiles created by X-rite ColorChecker (DCP) are placed into the users 'CameraProfiles' folder. Anyway, based on your findings, I created a subfolder and moved my X-rite profiles into it. Lr7.3 found them no problem. Therefore, I suspect the issue is the preset may be pointing to the wrong location. If the problem continues you may need to edit the preset to point to the folder containing the associated profile.

Ian Lyons I don't have VSCO presets/profiles to see what they have in the preset file to refer to the profile file to know what to tell people to do when I see one of these VSCO-missing-profile threads.

I don't have any VSCO presets/profiles. Therefore, I have no idea what the specific issue is, and those who have the presets don't appear willing to share them. VSCO have had plenty of time to resolve the issue. So, customers should really be asking them.

I was also got the missing profile message but then I realized I was trying to edit an iPhoneX photo using a Sony VSCO preset. If you're having problems, remember that the camera profiles are camera-specific -- Duh!

Any chance you are applying the vsco preset to a photo from a newer camera? I had the same thing happen, and then I realized it was photo from my newest camera. I went to vsco's website and downloaded the latest version of the preset pack, and then worked.

I'm having the same exact problem with all of my presets. Also, I often shoot with a Fuji X100F, and I used to be able to expand the Profile list and select various Fuji film simulations. This option is now gone as well. Something appears to be broken or wrong with this update, and it's making my post-production edits very difficult! Please update me with a solution!

Thanks Ian. I just checked and my presets and profiles are in the right folders. Lightroom still gives me this error: the following presets could not be renamed, everytime I launch it. Do you think editing the presets might solve this?

Not sure what exactly you're asking to do but if you have VSCO presets and the ones with camera profiles show a Missing Profile then try copying or moving the camera profiles up to the CameraRaw\CameraProfile folder instead of down underneath in subfolders.

If you're asking if you can reorder the profiles in Grid or List mode, which would have nothing to do with the thread you're posting to, then the answer is, so far, anyway, No. Things are alphabetical, the profile groups within the profile sections, and the individual profiles within a profile group. You can mark some as Favorites by clicking on the star and they'll show up in the Favorites group at the top.
