Any ideas how I can force it to offer me the m1 version, or will it offer that when I open the dmg file? (From what I have seen on youtube it should offer the choice when you hit download for mac OS X 10.11 or later.)

I just downloaded Google Chrome from the download page, and it looks like the app inside the DMG is actually a Universal version of Google Chrome. This means that it can run natively on both Intel-based Macs and Macs with Apple silicon (M1 and future).

I did wonder whether that was the case, but thought that this time of year would be a bad time for Google to change the system without notice just when people would be getting a new Macbook for Christmas!

That said, I dumped Chrome when I got my new M1 Pro MacBook Pro and installed Brave, which is a Chrome type browser, without the ads or tracking. It's actually terrific. Check this out --> -native-apple-silicon-m1-macs/

Uninstall CMM by following the developer's instructions. CMM is notorious on these forums for causing all sorts of problems with macOS. Anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software are not needed on a Mac and usually cause more problems than they solve plus they impact system performance.

Yeah, unfortunately this doesn't work any more. Chrome does not give you this option when downloading. They have switched to a single Mac install that is supposed to work with either... But in my case it does not

Edit: It has the ARM native version. I think it just automatically converted my Intel version into the M1 version with one of the regular browser updates. At least I don't recall having to manually intervene.

Update 11/18: The Apple Silicon version of Chrome for Mac is now available for download. As of this morning, those on M1 devices with the Intel variant of the browser are not automatically getting updated yet. Therefore, an uninstall is required to get the optimized version immediately.

Meanwhile, some users report that the Intel version of Chrome for Mac is automatically updating to the Apple Silicon variant. Since the latest release of Chrome launched later in the afternoon, some new Mac owners already downloaded the previous release this morning. You can visit chrome://settings/help to manually initiate the update process.

This support for Apple Silicon is rolling out with Chrome 87, which features a slew of other performance enhancements. Namely, an up to 5x reduction in CPU usage and a 1.25-hour increase in battery life thanks to background tabs throttling. The Google browser opens 25% faster, while page loads also see some speed improvements.

Initially, Chrome M1 support was a bit weak with Chrome underperforming compared to Safari. In fact, the first version of Chrome for the M1 chip reportedly made many Macbooks crash! After this 2020 update, though, Chrome performs well on M1 macbooks.

Google even has an installation guide for network administrators setting up Chrome on a fleet of business Mac devices. So, when it comes to M1 Macs at least, Google has Chrome running smoothly with consistent updates and support.

Chrome M1 compatibility is solid, but what about M2 compatibility? In June 2023, Apple announced the new M2 chip, the next generation of its in-house processors. The first devices to include the M2 chip are now on the market, including a completely refreshed Macbook Air.

How does Google Chrome perform on the M2 chip? Much like with the M1 chip, it had a rocky start. At launch, Safari was noticeably more power-efficient than Chrome on the M2 Macbooks. Google updated its Energy Saver Mode feature in Chrome to address the issue, though. The result was improved energy efficiency on M2 chips that actually improved the battery life of Macbooks.

However, for those looking for the best performance, there are a few things to consider. When the M1 Macs first launched, speed tests showed Safari had a significant edge over Chrome. As the built-in default browser on Macs, Safari will always be better optimized out of the box.

Hey guys, I'm trying to upload photos to the file page, but the 'Upload File' button is not responding with Google Chrome. Nothing happens when I click on the button. The same thing occurs when I try to upload a photo on the About Us page. I kept trying to upload files last night, and tested again this morning, and still does not work.

Is this an overall Shopify technical issue? Anyone else experiencing this? Looking forward to a response, thanks!

I did try on Safari, and the button works! But would still prefer to work on Google Chrome, since all of my work is saved there.

Still, anyone knows what the issue may be when using Google Chrome?

Hi @vpfitofficial20

Welcome to the Shopify Community. Thanks for taking the time to reach out about this, and for updating the thread while testing other browsers.

We did experience a live issue with the Files section of the admin earlier today (around the time of your posting) and this issue has since been resolved. Are you able to please try clearing your cookies and cache on your Chrome browser and try uploading a file again? Thanks for your patience today while our developers worked on a solution.

So you know, I've just tried uploading a file to the Files section of my test store using Chrome, and it was successful. Make sure your browser is also up to date if you're still experiencing issues.

Let me know how this goes!

I'm having the same issue. My chrome is up to date but I need to keep restarting it in order for the upload button to work. Is anyone else still having this issue? I prefer to use Chrome, is a fix in the works?

This is happening with me too! used to work just fine, but can't hit the upload button when I go to digital attachments from within a product, or from within settings. Contacted support and couldn't attach anything to the chat. super huge issue that I hope we can get help with!!

Although Google didn't actually announce the release of Chrome for Apple's new processor, it had to hit pause on the rollout for the M1 version soon after it started because of the new browser unexpectedly crashing.

"Earlier today we updated our Chrome download page to include a new version of Chrome optimized for new macOS devices featuring an Apple processor. We've discovered that the version of Chrome made available for download today may crash unexpectedly," said a Chrome support manager.

The workaround for fixing the M1 version of Chrome is detailed at the bottom of this story. The other workaround Google suggests is to just uninstall that version of Chrome and install the version for Macs with an Intel chip.

Because Chrome now prioritizes active tabs, Google says it reduces CPU use by up to five times and extends battery life by up to 1.25 hours. Google also says the browser starts up to 25% faster and loads pages 7% faster than before, as well as using less RAM and power.

As usual, the new version comes with numerous security fixes, including one for the so-called 'NAT Slipstream' attack that allows attackers to turn Chrome into a proxy and connect to internal networks if the user visits malicious website.

Chrome OS: This is the backbone of Chromebooks. Built primarily around Google's Chrome web browser, it's streamlined for online applications and tasks. This inherently makes Chromebooks heavily reliant on an internet connection, although offline capabilities have increased. For those deeply entrenched in the Google ecosystem, such as Google Drive, Docs, and other Google apps, Chrome OS offers an almost seamless experience. However, its simplicity can sometimes limit its application range.

macOS: MacBooks operate on Apple's macOS. Known for its fluidity, macOS is lauded for its stability and robust performance. Its ecosystem is packed with native applications optimized for the system. Moreover, it brings the advantage of cross-device synchronization for other Apple products like the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch users. Features like Handoff, Universal Clipboard, and Airdrop make transitions between Apple devices a breeze.

Chromebook: Chromebooks are equipped with diverse processors, including Intel's Celeron or ARM-based processors. They are primarily optimized for basic tasks, internet browsing, and streaming, which means they might lag when subjected to high-intensity tasks.

MacBook: Apple's MacBooks, especially the newer models, are equipped with the company's custom M-series chips, which have gained acclaim for their impressive performance and efficiency. Older models use Intel processors. Both variants are adept at handling daily tasks and demanding applications, often outstripping the competition.

Chromebook: The display quality on Chromebooks can be a mixed bag. While budget models may offer HD displays, premium Chromebooks have ventured into Full HD and even 4K territory, appealing to users seeking better visual experiences.

MacBook: Apple's Retina display is nothing short of iconic. With high resolutions and vibrant color reproduction, MacBooks consistently offer one of the best visual experiences in the laptop market. Their True Tone technology further refines on-screen colors based on ambient lighting conditions.

Chromebook: One of the notable strengths of Chromebooks lies in their battery longevity. Designed primarily for students and professionals on the go, most Chromebooks are equipped with batteries lasting between 8 to 12 hours on a single charge. Such resilience ensures that users can rely on their Chromebooks throughout a busy school day or a workday without constantly scouting for charging points. The battery optimization is tailored to ensure consistent performance during web browsing, video streaming, and document editing.
