Hello and welcome Tanmoy,

A warm hello to all of us too! I'd signed up in March but slipped introducing myself. I'm Sinjini Bandyopadhyay (pronounced "Shinjini"). I'm a Proposal Specialist with Kanbay, now Capgemini. I was with TCS for more than 2 years as a Technical Communicator. I started off managing superstore retailing across the country for an optical import house in Kolkata.

I graduated and majored in English Literature from Jadavpur University in 2003. Between grads and PG, I'd worked for a year for a marketing agency. And yes, although I completed boards in Kolkata, I was schooled in Sindri (then in Bihar) and in Durgapur; I'm a Carmelite!

I've toyed with the idea of being a responsive citizen. Personally, I'm interested in micro-finance institutions and self-help groups. But, I realize we could begin with small steps. Could we do something thru the Internet? I liked Basab N's idea of setting up a counselling support site. That's because it seems practicable within a short time instead of great ideas which may remain in the realm of ideas. Do we have more suggestions?

Best regards,
Sinjini

I apologize for being one of the last persons to introduce myself in
the forum. I have a similar profile as most of you - I did my
schooling in Durgapur ('86 batch), my +2 in Narendrapur ('88 batch),
and my engineering in Computer Science from Jadavpur ('92 batch). I
also did my MBA from a Univeristy in Colorado while I was working.

I came to the US in 1994 through RS Software India Limited, worked in
a company called MTW Consulting in Kansas City between 95 and 97,
joined Deloitte Consulting in 1997 and worked there till 2006. I left
Deloitte Consulting in 2006 and am currently working at a Fortune 500
company (Affiliated Computer Services that deals with healthcare
services/products) in Atlanta. I head ACS Inc's solution engineering
division in the US.

I am a US citizen now after 13 years of journey in this country, but
have strong connection with my roots in India. Needless to say (as
many of yours) my friends are dispersed all across the globe and I am
lucky to have 4 of my classmates (yes from Durgapur) in Atlanta even
though some of them are moving out shortly!

That's my saga. I will be traveling to India sometime early next year.

Welcome to you too and the rest of the group too.

I just returned from a week-long vacation in California - San
Francisco, Napa Valley, LA et al.

I have a friend in Kanbay - his name is Rajesh Surana - I believe he
is in Hyderabad.

I believe we can come up with ideas for contribution to our
professional group here.

Perhaps we can start a blog - my topic of interest will be "Are Indian
companies able to manage client expectations in offshoring
engagements?" My experience in managing multi-million dollar, turn-
key US based engagments at Deloitte using offshore resources (in
Mumbai and Hyderabad) was less than satisfactory (and I was not the
only one in the Deloitte senior management who had that feeling).
Similarly a premium Indian software vendor (yes, one of the big-4
Indian IT companies) will probably lose their contract (worth $ 16
million) for less than satisfactory work with my present company -

It will be a good conversation topic - no hard feelings! There are
many success stories and I will definitely like to hear them.

It would be interesting to list the general client expectations while outsourcing work and where the Indian companies fail to meet these expectations. We, as a group may then be able to brainstorm the root cause(s) and mitigation measures. It could be a valuable tool in the hands of our members managing either side of the chain.

I may be able to provide an outsiders viewpoint from my experience with managing work sharing in non-IT engineering sector.

Cheers

Hello everyone:
I am new member (Basab Nandi - thanks for the invite).

First my background:

Presently at: Washington DC
Education: MS CS from Temple Univ, '94
Work: Tech Manager, AOL. Earlier with Alcatel
Interests: Options, reading non-fiction, traveling and music

I would like to help the group in any way I can. I am
glad Basab has setup this wonderful group.

I am currently in the process of shipping an IT infrastructure
project/MSP to Bangalore (with a small sense of trepidation). My
experience has only been on this side of the pond, but I think some of
the reasons for failure are:

1. No clear expectations and SLAs. Either they are too vague or poorly
worded in a rush to beat the RFP deadline. Needless to say, they
aren't
understood until it is too late.
2. Extremely high turnover rate in India leading to delays and poor
quality of service
3. There are two types of US employers - people who want to send
projects to India coz everyone is doing it to save money and those who
want to truly utilize "follow-the-sun" model to manage costs *and*
go to market sooner than their competitor (with 16 hours of
development
as opposed to 8).
4. Lack of clear boundaries/job descriptions on what is expected from
team India.
