Hey all,

This weekend in Grenoble, France, we will try to replicate the skri lankese technic for composites that Uddaya's showed us during the WeIndia conference.
We will make the mold from a wooden blade, then the idea is to pour some foam inside of the mold in order to get a lightweight foam blade.
The foot will be made out of a wooden block, with a hole in order to pour the foam at the root of the blade.
When the foam will be cured, we will apply fiberglass fabric around the foam shape, and let it cure in a standard vacuum bag usually used to compress clothes.
This way we should end up with a lightweight composite blade, with the same shape than our standard wooden blade.

I'll take a bunch of pictures and keep you posted about the outcomes we will get

Cheers,
Jean

Hey all,

A quick update on this project, we've succesfully replicated the fiberglass mold out of a wooden blade.
We plan to use the mold to create foam blades. We've put a wood block at the foot of the blade to be able to screw the blade afterward. The picture attached is about the injection of the polyurethan foam in the new mold through a long plastic pipe to inject at the tip of the blade.

The foam blades will then be covered of more fibers and will be placed in a vacuum bag to cure.
We believe that these readily available vacuum bag and a regular vacuum cleaner are good option to facilitate the bulding of composite blades.
As it will help us preventing the apparition of air bubles.

As such we hope to get nice blades out of fiberglass with a foam core.

We will post update soon

Cheers,
Jean
