We've been waiting to send the welcome email until we
could announce the first NorCal tourney date, but a
Berkeley home football game was rescheduled for the same
date, and, well, that means we're not going to have a
tourney on that date.
So, you get to vote! Our choices for Berkeley are:
- Saturday, October 20th
- Saturday, November 17th
Or, we could consider a Sunday, perhaps:
- Sunday, November 4th
- Sunday, November 11th
Talk to your team, and send in your vote.
The dates for the other two tourneys are, tentatively:
1) Saturday, February 2nd, 2008.
2) Saturday, March 1st, 2008
or Saturday, March 8th, 2008
Remember that Nationals is probably / typically around the
end of March to the beginning of April, so our 2008
tourneys are good warm ups, but they need to leave a
little time before Nationals.
We're also working towards SoCal WCRC tourneys, and
perhaps even a combined NorCal & SoCal tourney this year!
More news on this when there's news.
More tourneys ... ? Let's set up scrimmages and
mini-tourneys between schools. Let us know if you're
thinking of a day and let's see what we can arrange.
In case you haven't already heard, we have two celebrities
in our neck of the woods ... Aubrey O'Brien and Jose Rojas
were both in the Faces in the Crowd section of Sports
Illustrated magazine!

your input on the other two tourney dates.

RollingWood Racquetball Club. we play there monday and wednesday nights from 7-10. drilling with our coach on day, and playing on the other night. we have 4 courts there, and we put on a clinic once a month for using the facilities. its great. recently looking to get jerseys and getting sponsored by Racquet Solutions, and already filling out grants for the year. we're going to be ready, organized, and a powerful team this year and going to be a great contributor to the WCRC and growing racquetball.

The (nearly finalized) date for the Fall WCRC NoCal
tourney is:
Sunday, November 4, 2007
at UC Berkeley. This date should be finalized by the end
of this week.
More news about a WCRC SoCal tourney soon, and more
details about the Berkeley tourney soon.
Thanks!
-John Bardos
Should I go ahead and do it?

The scheduling challenges (beyond my control) at UC
Berkeley are continuing:
Nov 4 is _not_ going to work.
We have asked for
Sunday, Nov 11.
Hopefully this will be approved by mid this week.
Thanks,

I received news today that the tourney at UC Berkeley,
Sunday, Nov 11 is 100% confirmed!
I will send out additional details later, but for now:
- We need your team roster by Monday night, Nov 5
- Please order your roster by player ability, and separate
into Div I, Div II, Div III
- Bring as many women players as possible, even beginners!
- Players arrive at 8:30am
- The tourney will start at 9:00am. We will try to have
slightly later start times based on travel distance.
Thanks!

I just checked last-year's schedule.
It looks like the last of the first-round matches were scheduled for
10:40.
Matt
I can discuss individual player ratings with you.
Returning players who have played before will have some sense for
where they fit into the
existing skill levels. It's good for new players to play against the
returning players to learn where
they might fit in. For players who are at the boundaries, it is
useful to ask them where
they would like to play. There might be some adjustments to division
assignments as the
draws get done, but the overall goal is for players to have some
great matches.
Matt
TOURNAMENT START TIME
The tournament will start promptly at 9 am, Sunday Nov.
11th. The building opens at 8 am and if you arrive early
you can start to warm up on the courts.
We will try to give later start times for teams traveling
longer distances, and we will distribute the tourney draws
and start times before Sunday.
- It will take time to "arrive", get signed in, get
situated, and get onto a court. Consequently, you need to
arrive 30 minutes in advance; e.g., a 9 am match start
means arriving by 8:30 am.
ROSTERS
We need your team rosters ASAP! Your team can be composed
of up to 8 men and 8 women. Please order your roster by
player ability, and separate into Div I, Div II, Div III.
TOURNAMENT COSTS & FOOD
The tournament costs $10. You must be a USRA member -
membership will cost $30 if purchased on-site at the
tournament. TEAM CAPTAINS MUST COLLECT MONEY IN ADVANCE
FOR THEIR TEAM. The team captain needs to have money -
cash or check - for the entire team collected and ready to
submit at the start of the tournament. Let me know if you
need help in determining if someone is a USRA member, and
we will have USRA membership forms that people can fill
out at the tournament.
PARKING
Since it's Sunday, most street parking is free! BE
CAREFUL where you park: Do not park in the garage at the
RSF, and several other UC Berkeley specific parking lots
will not be free.
TOURNAMENT RULES
Due to space limitations, the following rules will be in
affect:
- Matches are 2 out of 3 games.
- The first 2 games are to 11 points, and
- The 3rd game, if necessary, is to 9 points.
- All games are decided by 1 point - first player to 11,
or 9, points wins.
- Use the 10-second rule - 10 seconds between recovering
the ball and serving.
- 5 minutes of warm up time before a match.
- Matches are self-refereed.
- All other USRA rules apply.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
The Women's division will likely be round-robin - lots of
racquetball! There are 3 Men's Divisions, each run using
the "olympic format" ...
Within each division, there will be four sub-divisions.
Players who loose a match will drop down into the lower
sub-divisions to continue playing. The specific structure
is:
Division #
Gold
Blue
Red
White
All players start in the Gold sub-division. A loss in
first round (of Gold) will put you in the Red division. A
loss in second round of Gold puts you in the Blue
division. A loss in first round of Red puts you in the
White division. Winning players continue to play within
their sub-division. Consequently, each player will play
at least 3 matches. This same structure is used for
Division 2 and Division 3.
NOTES:
- Points are awarded based on your final standing at the
end of the tournament and are NOT accumulated over the
course of the tournament.
Points will be totaled for a team, and the team with the
most points wins.
FACILITIES
Lockers - People can use day lockers on a first come first
served basis and should bring their own lock as locks
often run out.
Towels - Towels are provided in the locker rooms, workout
towels are also available in the lobby - all no fee. You
should bring at least one towel of your own.

My name's John as well and I am interested in the tournament, but I
have a few questions. I don't really have a team to join so would I be
able to enter into this tournament, or is that a no? Could I bring
some local players I know to the tournament, and create a team of our
own? Those are really my only questions. I attend a community college,
Las Positas, which is why we don't have any sort of racquetball league
or group here in the tri-valley, so if you have any additional
information, that would be awesome.
Thank you!
