a custom guard typically runs about $100.  and you're right, you won't have it for monday.

i would think a double mouth guard would be even worse, but i haven't seen one in action so i can't really say.

i don't know of anyone who has this problem within our league.

According to the interwebz gagging on your mouth guard isn't rare but
knowing that I am not alone, while comforting, doesn't solve the
problem. I have tried 2 different Shock Doctor Max's one adult and one
child, the former being too large and latter being better but I still
had to cut the nubs off the back and it just seemed way too thick.

Lots of message boards recommend getting a custom one from your
dentist but that can run $300 and that isn't going to give me a mouth
guard for Monday night.

I am heading back out tomorrow to try and find some other options but
I thought I would ask here as well.

It seems, for me at least, that having the giant upper guard isn't
working out but I don't see any derby sites selling double mouth
guards (the double's I have seen online don't seem as thick). I am
wondering if that is because it's too hard to breathe in them.???

Anyway - any advice is greatly appreciated...

I feel your pqin. I use a mouth guard at night because I clench my teeth, and I have a ridiculously sensitive gag reflex. I suggest wearing it regularly for short periods of time, making sure to take regular, deep breaths. It will get better. I got a guard that just molds to your top teeth, and that seemed to help, too.

I personally don't have this problem, but i do know that Shock Doctor
Mouth guards range in sizes from childrens to womens and mens but al
so they have small medium and large sizes so that might help you find
a size that fits you better. They have those mouth guards at Sports
Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods, at least those are the places
i've seen them. They range from $3 to $25. But they are easy to
breath out of.
Hope this helps!

I used to have a lot of gagging trouble with my old Shock Doctor mouthguards. They are just huge and you can't really breathe/talk/anything around them comfortably. Then I finally got a custom one from http://www.protektmouthguards.com/ and it has been great. It fits really snugly (so snugly it is like a vacuum trying to pull it off) but without bulk. I can talk, drink, everything with it in - during games and practices I often leave it in the whole time. It won't be ready by Monday, but it might be a good long-term option for you. They mail you a mold, you fit it to your teeth and mail it back in, and then a few weeks later you get your new mouthguard in the mail.

No sure what I am doing wrong but my responses don't seem to show.
Thank you all for your responses and tips. I did end up getting 2 more
Shock Doctors and one of them is manageable. I took the advice of just
keeping it in for while and that seems to be working. If I make it
through tryouts and everything, I will most likely definitely invest
in a custom piece.

See you all tonight :)
