Preparing For Tryouts - Word to the Wise
  • Hydration
    • Make sure you are hydrated. You should be drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day (minimum). Most of us are dehydrated, and we might not even realize it. Start hydrating now so your body can adjust to this and you won't need to pee every 5 minutes during tryouts.
  • Clothes
    • Tight, form fitting bottoms are recommended. Anything loose, especially on your ankles, can get caught on skates (totes no fun).
  • Mental Prep
    • Tryouts will be physically and mentally challenging. It always is. But with that, remember, hundreds of women have gone through WCR tryouts and made it out the other side. Just work hard, take advice well and don't give up!

WCR League Tryouts - What you need

  • Number on your arms and your tshirt
    • Most of our evaluators you will have met, but everyone looks different with a helmet on. We ask that you have numbers on so we can ensure we are making notes about the correct people. (tshirt can totally be a white tank with a sharpie number on it)
    • I will be sending you a number one week prior to tryouts
  • Proof of Health Insurance

In-Depth Review - Tryouts

Part 1 of League Tryouts consists of the basic fitness test and the basic skating skills test.

The fitness test will include cycles of 30-45 seconds of basic bodyweight movements including:
We will be looking for good form and perseverance, not number of repetitions. It's OK to take a break to fix your form if you need to. One repetition/second in good form is much better than five with poor form.

Basic skating skills are listed on the Haymarket Rioters level descriptions (Rioters 1).
  • Skaters who pass the basic fitness test, but not all basic skating skills will be drafted to Rioters 1.
  • Skaters who pass all basic skating skills, but have not received any contact training will be drafted to Rioters 2.
  • Skaters who pass basic skating skills and have received contact training will be invited to join Part 2 of League Tryouts.

Part 2 of League Tryouts consists of the pack & contact skills test.
  • Pack & contact skills are listed on the Haymarket Rioters level descriptions  (Rioters 2).
  • Skaters who pass the contact/pack skill test, but have not received any scrimmage training will be drafted to Rioters 3.
  • Skaters who have scrimmage experience and have passed the WFTDA Rules test may be invited to Travel Team Tryouts on January 31 on trainers' discretion.
Cost
During the Rioters Program WCR collects a $40/month dues payment. Once you advance to a travel team level (if you wish) dues increase to $50.
