Subject: Gwinnett County Red Cross Shelter - ARES involvement
Gwinnett ARES was requested to assist with Internet access and
communications for a shelter opening today in Lawrenceville GA.
We had a number of folks help out today, and have got a number more
scheduled throughout the week. Everyone's help is sincerely appreciated.
If you haven't been involved in shelter operations, it is a interesting and
rewarding experience. At one time during setup, there were probably over 30
volunteers from the local church, Red Cross, and ARES. Overnight shift goes
down to about a dozen people.
We maxed out registration capacity of about 140 beds, but for a variety of
reasons, are only sleeping about 60 people this evening. More evacuees are
expected through the evening and during the week. To go from a closed
shelter to 140+ registrations in 6 hours is quite amazing.
The link below and the attached link are to a Atlanta Fox TV station that
did a story on the shelter. It's a good story on the shelter and some of the
evacuees. Okay, the real reason I'm sending the link is, well, I'm in it. In
the opening scene, I'm the left person in the "crowd" in the back, left of
the Red Cross vest. When they start talking about Amateur Radio, I'm the one
on the right and John Harmon (N4JCH) on the left operating the radio. You'll
also hear Dorothy Jubon (N2DLJ) calling a resource net just as you see John
and me.
ARES also get a pretty good endorsement by the Red Cross in the segment.
We were asked to perform two functions, one is the ability to communicate
with Red Cross Chapter headquarters in downtown Atlanta, the other is to
provide Internet access in the facility to access information. To access the
Red Cross Chapter Office, we deployed an antenna external to the building to
get into the 146.82 (W4DOC) repeater. For Internet access, we deployed a
D-STAR ID-1 radio with wireless router access locally to talk to the
computers. The ID-1 is connected to the WD4STR repeater to get access to the
Internet.
Numerous times during the day, the ID-1 connection showed value. There were
a number of evacuees asking what their weather was like back home and what
was happening with Gustav. We were able to look up the information and
settle some mighty worried people. In addition, we were able to access the
Gwinnett ARES Database to obtain phone numbers for members as we were
staffing the next few days.
As we get time, we'll have more information posted on www.gwinnettares.org
<http://www.gwinnettares.org> .
