All,
I just had a conversation with Wendell Gubler, the supervisor of roads for
the county, in reference to the resurfacing in progress on Old Highway 91 from
Santa Clara to the Gunlock turnoff and up the hill. Most of the road is done,
other than the southbound lane from the cutoff to Shivwitz. There was an
equipment failure in the machine that spreads the gravel, and while it's being
repaired, the trucks that spread the oil have other commitments, so work has
stopped. Wendell is hoping he can coordinate and finish the road next Wednesday,
and he was very cordial and even apologetic. He tells me that a study has been
done that concludes that if loose gravel is left on the road, it works loose the
gravel that adheres to the oil, so it behooves them to do a good sweep of
the road when they're done. He says that should be done a week from today,
unless the equipment situation prolongs the job into the following week. The
road should be well swept up to a foot from the edge.
Wendell called back a few people who left him messages, and he e-mailed a
few others. He has been extremely responsive and forthcoming. He mentioned to me
that not everyone who has called or e-mailed him has been very nice, and that
he's frustrated because he's just trying to do a good job. If you were one of
the insensitive cretins who were rude to this nice man, please consider sending
him an e-mail apology or calling him. He wouldn't tell me who was ignorant to
him, and it's better that I don't know. His office number is 634 5736 and he
even gave me his cell number, 680 5734.
The bottom line is we're looking at a week to ten days for completion and a
thorough sweep.
Ride safe,
Paul Scarpelli
