I have been going down some rabit holes on the topic of participatory mapping. One definition that seems to cover the topic is "Participatory mapping is a process in which community members contribute their own experiences, relationships, information, and ideas about a place to the creation of a map.
Cochrane and Corbett, 2018". I have seen this used often in an urban planning setting and in international projects. I am curious if others have formally done any participatory mapping projects as part of your conservation and cvollaborative work. Is this a topic worth developing some learning resources for?
Here are a few resources:

  Hi Joe!

In our facilitation, we often use participatory-mapping-esque exercises where stakeholders can share their priorities, concerns about a proposal, proposed changes, or their knowledge of a landscape (e.g., social trails here, trash dumping here, etc.). We very often do this for recreation planning exercises, but we have done this in other contexts as well. We've done this in-person with printed maps, sticky dots, and printed datasheets for folks to fill out or online using virtual platforms like Miro, Jamboard, and ArcGIS Online.

I also recently went down a participatory mapping rabbit hole and have some other resources to share:

I have also noticed that many of the resources on participatory mapping focus on international efforts. It would be great to develop one that is more specific to collaborative conservation in the US.

These are great resources! Thanks, Joe and Jessica, for sharing what you know. I look forward to digging in to some of these resources more.
My experience with participatory mapping includes in-person events with printed maps as well as online platforms, as in the following example from the city of Missoula planning process:
