Forwarding Frank's email and the maps of roads east of I-45 and south of
SH242 that are bicycle friendly (or not)...Greg, you are Mr. Bender Landing
and know these roads...any 'safe' ways to get from Bender's Landing (or
Oakridge N or Imperial Oaks) west to the Woodlands or north to 242 on a
bike!?

I'm glad some focus is being put on bike mobility to/from areas east of
I-45.

Steve

Hey there Ultra-milers!!

For those of you who did the Sunday ride from Woodforest Bank parking lot it
was, as always, a pleasure to ride with you - thanks for coming out... :)

Hey there team mates!

Some of you are probably familiar with this project. The WCC needs your
help. Randall Cade and a few other dedicated club members (e.g., Bruce
Cunningham and Steve Schoger) are part of the Bike The Woodlands Coalition
and have been working with the HGAC-sponsored South Montgomery County
Transit Study to plan safe bike routes in South Montgomery County. What
Randall could use input on is a section of the study east of i-45 and south
of Spring Creek (see attached maps and information). Basically, Randall
would like to know what roads you would consider safe to ride on now (e..,
have a shoulder, low traffic volume, etc.) and what might be logical cross
over points for the Grand Parkway and I-45.

You guys know the roads around here better than anyone else. Have a look at
the areas that need input and if there is anything you can contribute please
contact Randall directly at cad...@comcast.net . Thanks and have a great
work week......!!

Frank,
Please have a look at the attached. Can we get some assist from the riders
you mentioned to collect the info?
Thanks - Randall

Steve,

Unfortunately, there is not safe way to get to 242...much to my chagrin as I've been trying to plan a ride to Kingwood and back.  From Benders it is "safe" to take Birnham Woods N to Elan, Aldine Westfield, Northridge Forest (Imperial Oaks) to Robinson and Hanna road (I usually then do a loop in White Oak Estates/Tamina and head back).  In theory, one can continue N past Oak Ridge HS (Oak Ridge HS road)to David Memorial Drive (crossing Tamina/Research Forest Rd behind Home Depot) and past the Conroe ISD football stadium)....this route goes parallel to I-45.  Unfortunately this path ends about 1/2 mile south of Bikeland forcing nearly 1 mile on the I-45 frontage road to get to FM 242.  This a  section of road taht  I would NEVER put a bike tire on.....  it would be great if they ever cut David Memorial all the way through N to 242 (going behind Sam Moon shopping center)

As for crossing over 45...I don't think there really is a safe way either...have never attempted.  I guess potentially taking same route and turning left from Hanna back onto Robinson going west...but this turns into Woodlands Parkway with the flyway then merging in from the right at high speed (a death trap in my view).  Rayford and Research Forest are both awful with no sidewalks/shoulder on either side of 45.  Lake Woodlands Dr requires one to get on the frontage road to loop around to get over...maybe there is a minimal shoulder on the loop/overpass...but then dumped on The Woodlands side w/ no shoulder and merging highspeed traffic from those exiting from I-45 southbound.

So.....I am basically traffic bound to the west to The Woodlands and north in Benders (and of course to the east by the San Jacinto River)...and pretty close to the same to the south as riding Aldine Westfield has no shoulder and going though Old Town Spring is not easy (2920, Spring Stuebner, Louetta have no shoulders on the east side of 45).

Thanks for the feedback Greg…I thought this was the case.  Since MoCo Pct. 3 and HGAC are doing the mobility study, it is critical that safe passage be considered for cyclists and peds going north and west from the neighborhoods east of I-45, especially now that it has such a large and growing population.

I agree with you 100% on the I-45 frontage road…three lanes (now down to two, during the construction of the flyovers), and curbing…I took it once, when I was road testing the Cannondale SuperSix EVO a year ago from Bike Lane…after I got on it, heading to 242, I thought it was a very bad move…fortunately, it was before rush hour, but still nerve racking!  Then, after doing a good effort on 242, I came back to Bike Lane, by crossing 242, heading down the I-45 feeder and then side streets, and crossing on Lake Woodlands, I believe and then heading north on the feeder again!  And I’m alive to tell my story!  J  There needs to be a cycle track, next to the frontage road, beginning on top the curb, for cyclists and peds.  There is one planned southbound next to the I-45 feeder in Shenandoah.  I understand that David Memorial Drive is scheduled to be punched through north to 242…needs to be sooner rather than later…would also help with the CISD-Woodforest stadium football traffic.

I have taken 242 across I-45, with a level of higher than necessary risk.  I have crossed I-45 using the Woodlands Parkway, connecting with the feeders…again, the need for cycle tracks along the I-45 feeder.  A bike-ped bridge would be welcome, somewhere between Woodlands Parkway and Sawdust, again, with provision for getting to and from the bridge, on both sides of I-45.
