Hi gang

I figure who better to ask about the Triple Bypass Bike ride in
Colorado than you all. We are planning a family vacation this summer
that will take us as far up as the "Grand Tetons" and Yellowstone
parks and other than that we can make stops along the way. I can line
up my trip to do the Triple Bypass ride but I have a question.

In 2009 I rode from Durango to Silverton and was freaked out by the
altitude sickness and the curvy downhill. I was a lot more afraid of
downing the switchbacks than to climb them. So what are your
suggestions?

How to avoid the headaches?
Do I need a normal crank with a 11-28 or should I buy a compact?
Should I even dare attempt the double Triple Bypass?

Any and all information is welcome, including any training camps or
other things you may know about getting better at descending at high
speeds. Thanks for the info.

JJ

JJ the triple bypass is challenging but fun. My favorite section is Loveland Pass. I use a compact with 11-29. This is plenty of gearing. In regards to Altitude, it is good to spend time there
before actually starting the ride. But Unless your up there 3 weeks before a ride altitude will affect you. You just have to tolerate the headaches.
In re to descending you can pick up so much speed, you will pass cars. To safely descend you can feather both your brakes trying not burn them out.
I always check my tires & equipment before & after each ride. I will replace a tire at any sign of damage to avoid a flat I have used YouTube to learn how to descend
You should try Mt Evans since you will have a sag. that is the best ride in Colorado The views are the best
The family will enjoy the wildlife

And should you attempt the double? Last year of the thousands that
did the traditional only ~ 280 did the Sunday ride. On the
traditional route the downhills are mostly non technical. Vail pass
decent is one you have to watch out for. I know, had a carbon wheel
break one year. If you have altitude issues not sure I would
recommend Mnt Evans, but then again, go for it, whats 14,100 feet to
someone from sea level!!! If you have a sag would sag going down mnt
evans, the decent is just not worth the risk. And you will have to
purchase your Triple by pass kit on ebay or craigs list, cause it
sells out in a few hours, which was back on Jan 4th? The good news
they are readily available. Sounds like you have an awesome vacation
planed. Craig

Get up there a few days early. Ride an easy "spin" on the first day....some hill preferably. Take a rest day, then ride TBP. If you have more time just ride followed by rest days. If you don't have a bottle of water in your hand you are getting dehydrated. You will probably not be aware of sweating but you will be loosing water like crazy.
Going downhill....don't ride your brakes. Apply your brakes to keep your speed to the "below fear" level. Then let them off. Keep applying your brakes periodically but not continually. Otherwise heid doom, erse up, and way you go. 50x29 will get you up anything you will encounter.......only campagnolo has a '29..... Not sure what you're riding.
When you are sucking wind like fury in the second hour of 6% climb, remember to look up and take in the absolutely stunning scenery.
