Friends of WCC and WCCRT,

a new rider who wants to start racing on the road is in need of a 54cm road bike. He has a beginner's budget of <$500.  anyone out there with race worthy equipment they would like to help a newbie out with? For what it is worth, I can put a fork, handlebars, pedals and a saddle toward it on my dime . . .

Please let me know & I will do my best to get the info to him.

If he wants to race then he is going to need a better bike, in my opinion.

I had the perfect bike for your friend CJ, after I bought my C-dale EVO…a 54-cm SuperSix with about 24k miles…sold it to my roofer last summer for $750, with everything but pedals…while I got a better bike, there was nothing wrong with my SS.  Similarly, when I got my SuperSix, it was after selling a Trek 5.9 Madone to Mark Heady, with about 20k miles…he rode it for a couple of years, moved back to England and I brokered a “handoff” of that frame and fork to JJ, who built it back up and raced on it!  And when I first started racing back in 2002, I had a ‘80’s Raleigh 12-speed (6 gears on a cog) SuperCourse with toe-clips!  It worked for the six months until I could upgrade.  Sold a Quintana Roo – Tequila for $350 to one of our WCC/WCCRT colleagues when I upgraded to the QR CD0.1 in 2009…still a good bike and he is still riding it!

Sorry I can’t help you this time CJ, but I always like to see someone get going on a bike, racing or not, if they are not in a position to afford the $$$$ carbon steeds that we all have grown to love!

Thank you guys for the responses.

We will keep looking.

Racing what you got is how most of us started. As a point of clarification, if someone thinks they need top of the line equipment for a Cat 5 race, they are mistaken. Keep in mind the first 3 categories are for learning how to race, including multiple crashes (the more races = more crashes).  It bothers me to see the Cat 5 or even the Cat 4 field out there with brand new carbon frames and $2000 wheels, only to go down hard & then lament the loss of their bike. I am always one to use an old frame and upgrade the stuff on it . . .

We are looking for a steel, or aluminum bullet proof bike with average components (Shimano Ultegra or better) and bomb proof wheels. Any upgrades will happen as the learning and racing happens.

Again, the budget is in trying to keep the bike <$500 . . . or a simple donation of a frame and fork in the attic or corner of the garage which would be awesome as well.

Thanks again,

I am planning on being in Conroe area next weekend, any plans for a ride on June 14th?

Joe,
I've forwarded this thread to some cycling (bike hoarding) friends of mine here in Dallas area too.  Will forward any responses.
