All,

OK time to work in some hill training. So far it looks like Steve
Schroger, Orlando Alvarado (a buddy of mine who is riding on my Alps
trip in July) and myself are "on" of some Coldspring hill repeats.

I'm planning on parking at the San Jacinto county court house in
downtown Coldspring then a quick warm-up by riding up 156 and doing 3
or 4 sets of 224 between 156 (on each end). Each set is 16 miles RT.
No way to get lost!

Figuring to meet at 7:30...hit the road around 7:45am.

After...was planning on a BBQ stop at the Smoking Gun Lone Star BBQ
outside the front entrance to Double Lakes (although my buddy Orlando
is vegetarian).

Was thinking about hitting the park/Mtb-ing after....anyone
interested? Legs will be shot!

Greg

Also - am still looking to do a "Houston/Woodlands to Austin" in 1 day
on Sat April 13th. So far just Mike A and myself have shown an
interest.....

All,

Super hill training session today in Coldspring. Bill, Steve, Orlando
Alvarado and I departed at around 8am and did multiple 16 mile total
out and backs on 224. Only a few other riders out....a group of 3
doing the same as us and a group of 4 that seemed to do a single out-
back.

Super weather although the wind picked up at the end (up to 15 mph
from the south which added to the fun on the steeper climbing south
from Wolf Creek to 156).

Had some serious bike envy with Bill's new Cervelo S5 and Steve's
brand spanking new Team Liquigas Cannondale and his resplendent lime
green Scott shoes! Bummer for Steve was some shifting issues on the
front derailleur....hope you're able to get sorted easily.

Bill and Steve did 3 circuits, Orlando ended with 4 and I was able to
get in 5 ( I was thrilled as think the most I'd done previously was
4). Everyone rode great....special kudos to Bill - those virtual
training sessions are really paying off!

Legs are shot!!!!!! Which is a good thing!

Hope everyone else was able get out and enjoy the nice day.

Greg, you are the real hill climbing monster...KOM! Five repeats...with
that wind on the tough inbound...amazing!...you're ready for the Alps! Yes,
Bill is back to form! His training at VRC studio (bring your own bike, hook
up to a computrainer, and choose from a whole library of training videos,
and watch your power numbers) is just what the doc ordered, since he is
officiating at a TxBRA or TMBRA bike race more weekends than not. And
Orlando...good effort to crank out four of those bad boys!

Once I got in the small chain ring, I just stayed there...more SCR than BCR
on those hills...easier to coast than it is to grind! I will see Ken on
Monday for an adjustment...I caught him on a busy Friday afternoon to swap
out the regular chain rings with the compact ones...probably just the
tension in the cable. The hills seemed a lot easier with that new
bike...sub 15 pounds with pedals and fanny pack vs. 19# with my 5-year old
(24k miles) System Six. And the Zipp 202 Firecrest wheelset that Bill and I
had sure helped the bikes track true, even with the crosswinds...crosswinds
would make me unstable with my 808/404 wheelset...I'll keep those on the TT
bike...since I have only 32k on the wheelset!

Thanks again Greg for the organization of this ride...hill repeats, even
though not the mileage of the "typical" Ultramiler Saturday ride, do wonders
for strength work and hill climb training!

LOL, it was operator error! Nothing mechanically wrong with the front
derailleur...I kept trying to push the shifter lever too far in...all it
takes is a tap to go from the BCR to the SCR, and a little push to move back
from the SCR to the BCR! First time I have experienced Shram Red. Brakes
are much better than I'm used to, also. Everything about the new bike is
better....amazing how technology is improving bike performance...but you
still need the human motor to get the work done!

Ahhhh.....how about that! Did Ken look at you like you were crazy? I
get that all the time!

Glad it wasn't anything "major".

BTW - Looks like our Houston to Austin plan for Saturday has caved
in. My wife booked me into a tour of Trinity University on Saturday
(with our son).... Thinking I'll do the Bike Barn ride on
Sunday...but kind of want more miles than the 70 on offer....
