I saw that Molly refers people to the Assistance Dogs International (ADI) site when they ask about service dog programs in different areas.  Here's where you can look to see if there's one near you:

Perhaps there's a program near you that you could get to know.  And maybe they even need puppy petters!

I found one near me in Maine. But this info was most informative, it costs a LOT to raise one of these special pups! 

"t costs between $10,000 to $15,000 to train a Service Dog for our Veterans. Once these dogs are trained we want  to provide them at no cost to their Battle Buddy."
