Dear All,

 

The Center for Professional Communication is pleased to announce two seminars on academic writing with one of the world's top writing experts, Professor Brian Paltridge from the University of Sydney. 

 

Professor Paltridge is the author of more than 20 books on academic writing including Getting Published in Academic Journals and Thesis and Dissertation Writing in a Second Language. For many years, he has also worked as an editor of top academic journals.

 

In the seminars, Professor Paltridge will give practical suggestions to students working on their final papers and dissertations and answer questions about academic writing and writing for publication. He will also talk about his experience as a journal editor evaluating journal submissions.

 

The seminars will be useful for both masters and doctoral students. You can attend either one or both. Don't miss this unique opportunity!

 

 

Seminar 1: Writing in an Academic Style

 

Date: Wednesday, April 03, 2024

Time: Period 4 (15:00 – 16:30)

Venue: Classroom D

 

Description

This seminar will focus on features of academic style which are important for scholarly writing. These include matters such as clarity, precision, conciseness, impersonal language, vocabulary choice, ways of expressing caution, and complex vs simple sentences. Examples will be given which illustrate these features and suggestions will be made for making your writing more academic.

Seminar 2: Writing a Literature Review

Date: Thursday, April 04, 2024

Time: Period 4 (15:00 – 16:30)

Venue: Classroom D

 

Description

Literature reviews are an important part of thesis and dissertation writing as well as writing for publication as it is in the literature review that the research being reported on is located within previous research on the topic. This seminar will discuss processes of writing a literature review and characteristics of high-quality literature reviews. The stages of writing a literature review will be discussed as well as strategies for writing a literature review. Ways of organising a literature review will also be presented as will the use of language in literature reviews.
