Hey Delegates!

I recently added a FAQ to the WCA website. We're trying to reduce the amount of email the Board receives, and we're hoping this might help. If you have any suggestions for things to put on the FAQ, let me know, and we'll add it!

There's also a new feature for users without WCA IDs assigned yet. After creating a WCA website account, you can request to have your WCA ID connected to your account. As part of doing this, the competitor is required to choose the delegate they think knows them best in to connect their WCA ID, which will notify the chosen delegate via email. I've documented the whole flow in screenshots over on the GitHub pull request. Let me know if you have any suggestions to improve this flow, or run into any issues whatsoever!

Hey Jeremy,

Once more, thanks so much for all the work you do for the community.

Would it be crazy having those FAQ translated into several languages?  For the sake of consistency they should be available in English only, like the rest of the website.  On the other hand, when we felt that the comprehension of the texts was important, we translated the Regulations.  So, maybe having the FAQ translated is not a bad idea. And they are quite short. What do you think?

Thanks Luis!

As you said, the FAQ is pretty short, but almost every answer has a link to some other page written in English, so I worry that translating it wouldn't actually do much good. I would be interested in hearing what other people think, though!

Just verified the first request by sending the competitor a facebook message.

I was wondering what would happen if WCA delegate failed to verify the identity of the cuber (got cheated on purpose). When people are involved, a great chance for social engineering shows up.

Any ideas?

Best,
Zheng

So far I have not personally known any of the competitors who has requested an ID from me--most of them are competitors who have attended one or two competitions.

For me I use the guideline: if someone registered for a competition with that mail address, and they participated in the competition, it is probably correct. In general I check my mailbox for that specific address.

Yeah, I don't have much advice here. I always personally reach out to people if I don't know who they are.

We could force them to enter a birthday before they can request a wca id. Do you think that's worth the effort?

To answer Zheng's question, getting this wrong isn't the worst thing, the identity stealer will be able to request new profile pictures for the person whose identity has been stolen, and they'll be able to register them for competitions.

I think asking for a birthdate and making sure that the requested WCA ID’s birthdate matches.

OK, I'll make that a priority next, then.

Ok. I created an issue for this, and fixed it here. You can check it out at https://staging.worldcubeassociation.org/profile/claim_wca_id. You'll have to log in as a user without a WCA id to test it out, however.

I'll be pushing this live on wednesday night along with the WCA registration changes.
