Dear all,

Today I came across a friend of mine who had to face the new registration process, including creating an account (signing up), signing in, claiming his WCA-ID and finally, registering to a competition.  Please, let me introduce my friend to you briefly:  experienced cuber, grown man, not understanding a word of English.  If I'm posting this here now is because I was on the phone with him all the time and I could feel his confusion and... understand it somehow.

So here you are my two main conclusions:
  1. First off, the [Sign up] link is exasperatingly hidden.

When you're not signed in, the account menu should include [Sign up] apart from [Sign in] and [Didn't receive confirmation email?]

  1. Definitely, I think that translating all the pages related to accessing the accounts system is something that we will regret not to do.

I didn't assist my friend at first (intentionally :P ) and let him try and find the things on his own.  Well, apart that he was unable to 'see' the [sign up] link, later I had the feeling that he wasn't familiar enough to the creation of an account process, and this joined to the fact that he was not able to understand English, made me realize that setting up accounts in the new webpage is a real, big problem for some of our visitors.

However, as soon as his account were perfectly set up (including ID claiming) he registered to the competition quickly.  Presumably because this is a process that he's got used to, while registrations are done just once.

Apart, I also think that the claim ID step is unnatural to the rest of the process, and that we should remark its importance someway.  What about showing a progress on the several steps of the process?

1. Sign up
2. Validate your email
3. Sign in
4. Claim your WCA-ID
5. You're done!

I know that this is problematic because the process doesn't have to be completed in one session, but at least we could show somewhere that the process includes four steps.  Or we could numerate them and say "Hey, you completed 2. Validate your email.  Go here and 3. Sign in to your account".

Don't know.  At the moment, setting up an account seems to be a nightmare to some of our cubers. :/

Thanks for reading,

- Luis

That's really useful!

This is how professionals check if their UI designs work as intended. Usually they don't.

I think you're right that a Sign up link would be useful at the right-side bar.
Maybe we could lose the "Didn't receive confirmation email?" and replace it with Sign Up

The "Didn't receive..." could go next to the "No account? Sign up!" at the sign_in page...

Thanks for doing this research and taking the time to analyze it, Luis! I've created an issue on github here: https://github.com/cubing/worldcubeassociation.org/issues/317, and taken care of the lowest hanging fruit here.

Thank you for your work, Luis!

We also just had our first competition announced since the changes, and also noticed some difficulties. We explained the process on our website on a bit more details, so people can use that as a guideline, but still some have trouble registering properly. I can confirm that many of the cases are due to laziness, but with some extra help, they could connect their ID.
