Please review: http://www.annarbor.com/news/dump-truck-hits-pedestrian/

Wasn't it a dump truck which killed the pedestrian on Michigan Ave
about a month ago? I might not have this right...

We often think of awareness/education for drivers of personal vehicles
but there should be an additional level of awareness/education for
commercial vehicles as well.

You are right, Karen. In my experience, and I think "Pete the Light"
would agree, some of the most aggressive drivers are behind the wheels
of school buses, and, as Ken Clark has posted, city bus drivers also
could demonstate safer behaviors. Perhaps after dealing with the
public and maniac drivers for so long, commercially licensed drivers
are just worn out from providing "due care," or just numb to the
potential impact of a negligent homicide on their own lives (not to
mention the victim and victime's family).

Fortunately, I think there may be a means of reaching these commercial
drivers that would be more effective than banners across Main Street
or a few posters. These drivers must all have performance reviews,
and probably all have safety training requirements. It would be a
huge project, but developing a training module for ped/bike awareness
might be offered to managers of these drivers. I wonder if anyone has
pursued that?

Regarding commercial drivers, "we know who they are" at least in many
cases. Reporting dangerous driving to their employers may have some
desirable effects.

Both the times I have reported commercial drivers to their employers, I received a very strong apology (by the driver in front of the employer) and in one case, the driver was suspended until he completed a safety review course (U/M bus driver).
